Reservoir dogs: a woman shoots Mr Orange in the guts.

Not generally. But e.g. Saving Private Ryan has the scene in the beginning where the Army people tell the mother (!) that three of her 4 sons have died. And although I'm not sure there's actual dialogue you can hear in that scene (does anybody recall?) I'd still classify the mother as a non-extra character in that movie.

master and commander is kinda hilarious because there's this one awkward scene where they dock and russell crowe makes eyes at a native girl and it's like the film is just trying to reassure the audience that he's not gay

There's another meaning of the word 'dock' that makes your post read quite differently...

So, no word spoken, still an impressive character IMHO.. Different than in Lawrence of Arabia, where the (all non-talking) female 'characters' are more like background figures.

Extra isn't only lack of dialogue, it's also the lack of specific action.

I recognize the lampooning of how women are traditionally objectified inherent to this question, but beyond that rhetorical use, it's pretty silly.

Yep.
Look at the photos chosen for the question.

Also, I knew skyfish would contribute his film knowledge and I would end up adding stuff to my netflix queue

That's because in movies, men are more important than women.

There's an element of truth to that Abz.

Look at the contributions of women to history, art, science and technology.

Now look at the contributions of men, then play spot the difference.

But we're focusing on movies here. Pi listed some excellent, classic movies with nary a woman to found as a major character.

Where are the movies no men in major roles that are as good as say Stand By Me or Saving Private Ryan?

There are indeed movies like Steel Magnolias or Waiting to Exhale that only females for the main characters. While some women might consider these to be as good as Stand By Me or Saving Private Ryan, few males would even want to watch them...

Well, despite the objectionable opinion I quoted at the top, I thought his question was a good one. It didn't have to be a rhetorical one, as he appears to have intended; I thought there was potential in it to explore how women are getting roles where their gender wasn't relevant - - that they were people first. This one? Meh.

given your criteria, wouldn't lesbian cinema for adult viewing be the only thing that passes your test?

i would love if there was a movie that passed on one of the last three criteria

is the only story you can imagine that doesn't have men in it cinema for adult viewing?

and conversely do you think that the thing is gay cinema for adult viewing?

And that's the point. Most of the movies Pi listed were excellent films and have appeal across the board. Steel Magnolias? I'm sure that's in every guy's top 10,000 movies...
