I came to the radical conclusion that no, not only should English not be made the official language after all this time, but some schools should be taught entirely in Spanish to help ease immigrants' transition. It's a question of autogenesis. Tell a kid their language/homelife is wrong and their intro to academia is ruined. This is America! Everyone deserves an equal shot at education. No. I don't think we need an Official Language. This country is a melting pot of almost every language on the planet. We should embrace that.

I like it just the way it is...as harold said it is a melting pot.

So this guy's a dirty pedo now?

He's moving down that social ladder really f*cking fast.
12 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Wednesday 3/31/10 - 11:54:38 AM EST (GMT-5)
I think that is working just fine to have the individual states determine their own official language(s).

Not knowing the English language impedes one's ability to be a productive member of American society- - why should we discourage non-English speaking people from adopting it as their second language?

12 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Wednesday 3/31/10 - 2:56:59 PM EST (GMT-5)
Yes, I'm friends with 14 year old girls. I read their poetry, I talk to them when they're lonely. There's nothing dangerous in that. I was just defending my style.

I also think the states should have their own language laws, skine.

I'm not saying they shouldn't learn English. I'm saying they should learn it eventually, after they have appreciated their own language.
12 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Wednesday 3/31/10 - 3:04:22 PM EST (GMT-5)
The winky face and "it gets results" comment lead me to believe that you're full of sh*t.

And even what you described makes you a creepy f*cker, nonetheless.
12 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Wednesday 3/31/10 - 3:05:36 PM EST (GMT-5)
Also, your proposition is non-sensical.

Firstly, you're telling these kids to learn english at a later date, which means their skills are much likely to be on par with a native speaker.

And second, why "entirely" in Spanish? Supplementary ESL courses will cause them to explode?
12 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Wednesday 3/31/10 - 3:10:17 PM EST (GMT-5)
"which means their skills are much likely" doesn't make any sense. I think you just argued against yourself.

I just think there is so much great Spanish literature that they're missing out on. How are they gonna relate to Jane Eyre? Of course they'll hate school. I just think our public schools need to change radically.
12 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Wednesday 3/31/10 - 3:15:13 PM EST (GMT-5)
the missing word there "less"

Also, you failed to address my points.
12 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Wednesday 3/31/10 - 3:29:25 PM EST (GMT-5)
Which points? That I'm a creepy f7ck? or that ESL courses should be sufficient?

Maybe you're right. A lot of people don't "cross the line" and I am kind of old. But I like to encourage people who don't have a lot of confidence. I like poetry and there are a lot of young girls who post poetry in articles. I like to encourage them.

I don't think ESL is sufficient because so many minorities are failing school altogether. The system just passes them over, tells them they can't pass a grade, to repeat it, and nothing changes. In certain areas of the states there should be Spanish schools. It should reflect the population of the area. English speaking people living in a majorly Spanish area should know Spanish anyway.
12 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Wednesday 3/31/10 - 3:34:23 PM EST (GMT-5)
I don't think you understand my point.

You say certain schools should be taught "entirely" in Spanish.
Why?
Why can't you have all the other classes like Math and Sciences taught Spanish, but with one or two strong ESL courses mixed in. Otherwise, if kids learn English far later in their development, their English skills will never match those of native speakers.
12 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Wednesday 3/31/10 - 3:52:00 PM EST (GMT-5)
I still don't understand you. Now you're suggesting math/science in Spanish and ESL in...English?

I just think it should go by census. If it's predominantly Spanish, teach the schools in Spanish. There was a law that almost passed in Pennsylvania a hundred years ago. The population was primarily German and they wanted to have their schools taught in German. I think it makes sense. It's serving the people.

But you're right about the latent skills. There's just no denying the fact that English is The Language to learn - for society, jobs, everything. I just think it's a shame that kids have to learn their language is "wrong." There's so much cool Spanish literature.
12 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Wednesday 3/31/10 - 4:14:34 PM EST (GMT-5)
"Now you're suggesting math/science in Spanish and ESL in...English?"

How do you not teach ESL in English ?

"I just think it's a shame that kids have to learn their language is "wrong.""
And don't see how anyone taught it's "wrong", it's just not the dominant language, it is a fact.
12 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Wednesday 3/31/10 - 4:34:16 PM EST (GMT-5)
Oh, what does ESL stand for? I'm dumb. I was thinking of ESOL, but it's the same thing?

No, it's a fact that kids are turned off to academia because of its negative attitude towards minor literatures. This happens with black kids all the time. "Your language is defective" is what they learn, when they should be told they just have to learn how to "code switch" from their home speak to formal English.
12 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Wednesday 3/31/10 - 4:42:38 PM EST (GMT-5)
ESL = English as Second Language.

Comparing this to black children is not at all analogous, though. One is dialect (arguably) and the other is a separate language

Also, there is "negative attitude towards minor literatures in academia". It's narrow-minded teachers picking the books they read and understood, which isn't many.

You can put in Cortazar, or Garcia or Carpentier in translation, and it would work.
12 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Wednesday 3/31/10 - 4:44:29 PM EST (GMT-5)
A lot of the "language" spoken by Black kids these days is 'defective'. Ebonics is a bastardization of the English language and should not be taught.

Immigrants used to come to this country and work hard to learn English. Their kids went to school, learned English and then taught their parents to speak English in the evenings.

Like it or not, this country uses English as the primary language, there is no reason to avoid/delay teaching it.

12 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Wednesday 3/31/10 - 4:45:23 PM EST (GMT-5)
I once set a teacher on a 3 day tangent on whether or not ebonics was it's own dialect in highschool
12 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Wednesday 3/31/10 - 4:47:34 PM EST (GMT-5)
"Ebonics is a bastardization of the English language and should not be taught."
And North American English was at one point a "bastardization" of the King's English. So this statement is incredibly simplistic.
12 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Wednesday 3/31/10 - 4:48:44 PM EST (GMT-5)
Considering that we declared our Independence from the King, it seems appropriate...

dammit mike, let me ax you sumtin...why you gotta hate on our take on da "king's english"?

Completely agree.
12 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Wednesday 3/31/10 - 5:09:37 PM EST (GMT-5)
Well I think the current system takes a completely flawed approach.

You can teach black children "mainstream" English without telling them their dialect is "wrong".

And you can integrate Hispanics students into the system without compromising their English skills and without throwing them into "English Immersion".
