State senators are considering a proposal that would allow South Carolina to execute those convicted two or more times of sexually assaulting children.

The amendment came as the Senate took up sexual offender legislation crafted in response to a Florida girl kidnapped and killed last year and a week after a Hartsville man was charged with abducting two girls to an underground shelter and assaulting them.

Currently, South Carolina prosecutors can only seek the death penalty for murder with aggravating circumstances. If the proposed amendment by Sen. Kevin Bryant of Anderson passes, South Carolina would join Louisiana as the only other state to allow the death penalty for an offense other than murder, senators said.

'They may never recover from this,' Bryant said Wednesday of children who are assaulted. 'I say that's just as bad as taking a life.'

Do you agree with the new proposed law stating that repeat child sex offenders should face the death penalty?

No, it won't prevent the nightmares or heal the scarring of the victim, but it will make them feel at least a little better knowing they don't have to look over their shoulder, afraid they'll see that person again. Killing the attacker is a form of healing and every form of healing should be available to them.

I've been raped as a child, and killing him wouldn't be healing for me.

Quite the reverse. "Because I told, he's dead. I killed a man."

The guilt would be overwelming.

No, I'm sorry, but I detest the death penalty and always will.

I'm not sure how I feel about the death penalty, but I don't think that child sex offenders should be put to death. A life sentence, definitely.
I don't know if I'm weird for (in these cases) thinking of jail not so much as a punishment but to make society safer. The important thing is making sure they'll never be around children again, not whether they live or die.

weather life imprinsonment is expensive or not no one shud have to face death, not even for that
14 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Monday 8/6/07 - 9:28:25 AM EST (GMT-5)
I'm opposed to the death penalty in all cases, but even if I was in favor of it in murder cases, I have a deeper problem with this proposal. I strongly disagree with the story's quote that rape is just like killing someone because they may never recover from it. I'm no fan of slippery slope arguments, but this claim begs for it: some people never recover from slanderous attacks, muggings, being injured by a repeat drunk driver, etc. Where do you draw the line? And how do you determine two offenses? Would something done at the age of 12 count? (The NYTimes mag recently had a cover story questioning the classification of adolescents as sex offenders.) Would statutory rape count? Would molesting two people at once count as two charges? Ongoing molestation? What about treatment options?
14 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Monday 8/6/07 - 9:50:19 AM EST (GMT-5)
I don't think the death penalty for anything that's not as bad as murder makes sense.
14 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Monday 8/27/07 - 4:29:08 AM EST (GMT-5)
No, they should suffer more than just simply put to death. And maybe they should make jails more crowded so they can be miserable...If the sex offender dies the victim still has to live with the fact that it happened to them, there is no justice in that at all....
14 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Saturday 10/27/07 - 12:45:10 PM EST (GMT-5)
have the sex offender be sent to a jail and be raped by huge black guys lol
14 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Saturday 10/27/07 - 1:29:48 PM EST (GMT-5)
I think that they should be castrated. Then they should serve a sentence in prison. That way it wouldn't be a temptation for them ever again, and no one would die.

You really think castration stops the temptation.

What's wrong with chemical castration then?

Also, concerning the death penalty, we should stop dragging it out. As soon as they are convicted, take them to a designated room behind the courthouse and shoot them in the head. Nowadays it seems like people practically die of old age waiting in prison to be excecuted...
14 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Saturday 10/27/07 - 11:54:38 PM EST (GMT-5)
The death penalty is wrong. Thou shalt not kill.

So then killing animals must be wrong too?
and the plants?

Yes you should only eat fruit off the trees and vines without killing the entire plant.

Life in prison without parole.

Raping a child in many cases, I believe, is worse than murder.

A child is innocent and is destroyed by these foul excuses for human beings.

Murder victims, not always but in many cases, are not innocent. They are violent criminals in their own right. That doesn't mean they should have been killed but they aren't wholely innocent.

14 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Sunday 10/28/07 - 10:55:02 AM EST (GMT-5)
Nah, just castrate them.

The cost of executing someone, with all the MANDATORY appeals, is many, many times the cost of keeping them in prison for life. If you are worried about crowded prisons, maybe we should let some of the low level drug offenders out. The ones that have been in there since the 70's because they were at a party where someone snorted a line of coke. Now, for my answer, I contend that they be locked up for life the FIRST time they molest, therefore, there would be no repeat offenders.

Definatly agree, 100%.

I don't agree with the death penalty, so no. I say let them rot in prison, though.

Maybe, but still, an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.
