State senators are considering a proposal that would allow South Carolina to execute those convicted two or more times of sexually assaulting children.

The amendment came as the Senate took up sexual offender legislation crafted in response to a Florida girl kidnapped and killed last year and a week after a Hartsville man was charged with abducting two girls to an underground shelter and assaulting them.

Currently, South Carolina prosecutors can only seek the death penalty for murder with aggravating circumstances. If the proposed amendment by Sen. Kevin Bryant of Anderson passes, South Carolina would join Louisiana as the only other state to allow the death penalty for an offense other than murder, senators said.

'They may never recover from this,' Bryant said Wednesday of children who are assaulted. 'I say that's just as bad as taking a life.'

Do you agree with the new proposed law stating that repeat child sex offenders should face the death penalty?

Because it is the price we have to pay to protect ourselves.

"but why should the taxpayer pay for a paedophiles food and shelter?" I've read it costs more to put someone on deathrow and then execute them than to lock them up for life.

No, that is a common misconception, due to the high cost of Death row. While Death row is VERY expensive, life-without-parole prisoners get the same appeal rights as Death row inmates, plus the cost of building more facilities and more guards for more LWP inmates, because, while the DR inmates get cycled out in about 10 years or so, the LWP inmates are in to the long haul!

Here's my problem with that argument, though. I don't care how much it costs to execute someone. It could cost ten times as much, and I'd rather spend that money than spend a fraction of the cost feeding, clothing and sheltering a murderer, rapist, pedophile for the rest of his life in a comfy prison.

But that's just me.

15 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Thursday 4/6/06 - 2:37:42 AM EST (GMT-5)
No. I don't believe in the death penalty for anyone.

Sure why not?

I think all child molesters should face the death penalty, no matter how many times they've molested kids.

When the hell is the last time you saw a death row inmate executed in about 10 years?
Twenty seems the norm.
New York does not have mandatory appeals for LWP.

The last execution that seemed to happen "quickly" was Timothy McVey...

What? 20 years? I would go so far as to say a 15 year average, but 20?

The only different between the "mandatory" appeals and other appeals is tha the "mandatory" appeals get files automatically, were as you have to do the paperwork for the appeal other ways.

No.
Because I think life in prison is harsher than the death penalty. Let them be pushed around in there and raped. See how they like it :P

Saying that I think/wish someone should/would die and saying that I think the government should be killing people are COMPLETELY different thing.

I don't believe in the death penalty, period. For any offense.

As far as I'm concerned, those who believe in government sanctioned killing are the sick ones.

No, the kiddie diddlers are the sick ones, and they should be exterminated. Or have medical experiments done on them.

Maybe they just all should be put on a very remote island, surrounded by man-eating sharks and basically let them fend for themselves. This way eventually no child would be subjected to the devestating sickness called Peadophilia. Maybe the 'gene' responsible for it would just die out????

Will you PLEASE post more than 3 words for every response? I hate it when people don't back up what they say.

I don't believe in the death penalty for any crime, but life imprisonment (without parole) for repeat offenses sounds fair.

You should kill sick people (you should kill people at all really...)

I wouldn't agree with the death penalty used against anyone

No I'm against the death penalty. It would be wrong to kill them...Even if they murdered, raped someone they're still humans. People should respect human beings who even made the wrong decision.

Just curious, so nobody blow a gasket...

For those of you who are against the death penalty, would you feel the same if it was your child, niece, nephew? I tend to agree with you, but I'm not sure I could be that strong if it was my kid...

15 yrs ago - Thursday 10/19/06 - 1:44:32 PM EST (GMT-5)
KILL THE MOTHER F*CKERS! THEY DESERVE IT! just because the only find out about 1 child, there's almost always more.

this is coming from a girl who was molested by a police officer.

I'm not sure it would make much of a difference--if my kid was the victim, killing the criminal would not undo what was done. After 15 years of appeals, the initial rage/hatred against the criminal is bound to dissipate a bit and more rational thought can prevail...

When will the U.S join the civilized world and abolish the death penalty? China, Yemen, Iran... you have strange bedfellows...
15 yrs ago - Thursday 10/19/06 - 3:29:46 PM EST (GMT-5)
Well this is an interesting topic. To answer the question... kill em all.

Anyone who molests or rapes a child is sick. Many of you say they should only get life sentences and that the death penalty does not fit the crime committed. Tell that to the 5 year old who was raped by her 40-something year old next door neighbor when she gets older and still has nightmares about the whole ordeal and panics when she sees a strange man. Also, our justice system is far from perfect. These men get out on parole on a regular basis and they're right back to being the predators they always were.

Someone mentioned chemical castration. That's great but for the majority of sex offenders it's a mental thing. A play for power. An example would be a case of a child who was raped by a man, who had been chemically castrated, with a wooden spoon!! Chemical castration does nothing... just makes them more inventive.

I say death penalty and make it a public execution; I'd watch, popcorn in hand.
