WASHINGTON - The investigation of the treatment of prisoners from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq has recently uncovered 12 more detainees who have died in U.S. custody. Defense officials told reporters that the Army had investigated the deaths of 32 detainees in Iraq and five others in Afghanistan since August 2002, 12 more than the Defense Department reported two weeks ago. The victims are from 33 separate cases, two of which involved more than one death.

Nine of the cases remain open, and eight of those are classified as homicides, NBC News’ Tom Busby reported. Those deaths, six of which occurred in Iraq, are believed to have followed assaults by U.S. soldiers before, during or after interrogations...

Do you think it's really all that surprising that Iraq detainees are being abused and killed, considering people who voluntarily join the military have no problem with violence?

Ridiculous questoin.
Does it really suprise you that there are on-field fights in the NFL considering the people that voluntarily got there have no problem with violence?

"I am currently serving in the U.S. military. I and so many like me are not violent people, just people who are serving and protecting their country."

From whom? The Iraqis? When exactly did the Iraqis attack the US? If anything, they need protecting from YOU.

well if this isn’t a new low for you...

This war was based on 2 claims; Iraq having links to 911-false/lies and Iraq having WMD-false/lies. No soldier has any legal obligation therefore to obey any orders given during an illegal war. You made your bed, now die in it!

This "torture" in US prisons is such a bunch of BS. It sickens me how some ignorant little brainless nitwit compares that situation to real torture and murder under Saddam. Saddam buried whole families-parents with children, alive! Saddam would torture to the death parents in front of their children and children in front of their parents!! Saddam had women raped for fun, then had them disfigured by giving them acid bathes! Women were murdered, beheaded or shot in stadiums for going out in the daytime with out their head scarves!! U disgrace those dead! U spit on their very lives because u defend the rapists and the murderers that killed them! Then u try to tear down the very people that r actually saving them!! U r an ingnorant ignorant stupid fool!!
17 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Sunday 5/29/05 - 12:27:51 AM EST (GMT-5)
And as for the insinuation that "people that join the military have no problem with violence" ...this is a stupid statement!!What is that suppose to mean?? Is protecting a weak man from a thug an act of violence?? is defending a women from being raped an act of violence?? Is self defence an act of violence?? If someone tried to kill your children and u fought back-- would that be an act of violence?? If u hate this country so much, then why dont u just leave it!! There is no wall that keeps u in! Go! Go live in Iran!! Go there and say u r a christian and see how long u live. Say u r anything, for that matter, other than a muslim! And when u r imprisoned, ask for a Bible and ask the guards to accomodate your diet!! See if they cut your head off instead! Complain to them that some guard flushed the Bible down the toilet and see what sympathy u get!

So we shouldn't strive to be upholding standards of treatment just because their extremists aren't, 112233w?

Eye for an eye is not only outdated, it's a rather pathetic way to gain support in a war which hinges on gaining support of other peoples.

17 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Sunday 5/29/05 - 9:15:43 AM EST (GMT-5)
I dont support the premise u make we r doing an "eye for an eye" And i dont give a rip what the world thinks! Especially Europe!! This whole thing at this prison was done by a few soldiers! The fact was, the army had already disciplined them and removed them long before the public found out about it. U r comparing soldiers puting underwear on the heads of terrorists with mass murder and mass torture of innocents! U r playing into the hands of those whole conduct beheadings!! U r an idiot!

It's the Middle East whose support we need. If we don't have the support of the people, then there's no point to the war at all.

And please, for all our sakes, spell out words, you lazy bastard.

17 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Sunday 5/29/05 - 11:14:16 PM EST (GMT-5)
U brainless pile of dog crap! We have the support o the Iraqi people! But no, we dont have the support of the terrorists u moron! Y dont u actually try 2 research something b 4 u comment on it. so u dont appear so ignorant! We didnt have the support of the german people either during WWII u dimwit!! I suppose there was no point 2 that war either, then, u lobotamized ass!! And as for me not spelling out words! That is not a sign of laziness, it shows how smart I am!! But as for u, it s obvious u r a lazy saddam loving fart! If i thought u were worth the time, I might spell out my words 4 u! But u r not! I spit at u!!! Maybe from now on when ever i poste 2 u, I wll tlk lke ths!! Thr! U lke that!! Tke Tht!! And Tht!! Hr! Fgr ths 1 owt!!!

We have the support of a lot of them, but not all of them. Those that don't support American intervention aren't all terrorists, however. If we intend to hand over government control smoothy and quickly, as much public support as possible is a requirement.

German arguement = pathetic straw man that doesn't even resemble the original situation at all... not worthy of response.

The rest... Oh, hell, just go f*ck yourself.

Enforcing US Human Rights Laws

you need to get something straight, enforcing human rights is only applicable to those whom we choose and feel are worthy of such. sheeesh!

although I think it's great that we as Americans be our biggest critics, I think it's alarmist and ignorant to suggest any human rights infractions perpetrated by our military and our government are anything, and I mean anything, close to the Soviet gulag...

the comparison has no merit and is obviously just ridiculous anti-war propaganda...

unfortunately, we live in a society made up largely of people who have never left their zip code who fall for these baseless incendiary comparisons...

I think if some of you made the effort to take a vacation to the third world outside of a resort, you wouldn’t be so quick to fall for what those bullsh*t blogs are dealing...

'considering people who voluntary join the military have no problem with violence?'

I joined the military once and I hate violence, the above assertion is a bit much

Your consideration is irrelevant. A study using Stanford University student volunteers established that, given a position of unrestrained authority, even the "best" people will rapidly begin to engage in abuse. Some of the things done in the Stanford experiments strongly resembled the photos we've seen from Abu Ghraib.

A social science experiment done at Stanford some years ago established that well-to-do high-achieving young people will do most of the things we've seen in the abuse photos, given no responsibility and no supervision, and the opportunity.

OK, *that* was funny.

Actually, aldod, SOME of the guards were a lot less harsh. Not all of them went psycho-enforcer... It's just that the psycho-enforcers were putting more effort into watching every movement of the prisoners and were simply more overbearing.

You military types are full of it

No matter what you say to justify your actions I feel a great sense of relief that no matter what, you are all going to Hell

Doesn't matter how you explain yourself, or what excuses you make, doesn't matter what you tell yourself at night so you can sleep a little easier in your bed, doesn't matter if you believe everything that comes out of G Dubyas prezel hole,

you are still going to Hell
