Wayne Gretzky #1 forever

wait a minute howdy...kobe and yao ming??? except for maybe babe ruth, your not even naming people close to the top of their sport! Jordan is probably the greatest basketball player ever, but consideration has to be given to wilt, magic, bird, oscar robertson and a couple others. He is not even close to the most dominant athlete of his sport though. Gretzky probably is the most dominant by the numbers, but he couldnt do as many things as say Lemieux, Gordie Howe or Bobby Orr. If you go by the numbers, Barry Bonds would have to be considered one of the greatest baseball players ever, along with Pete Rose and a few others. All in all though, it is way to hard to compare an athlete of 50 years ago to one of today, especially when they dont play the same sport! The only thing you can say, is that Jordan probably has the largest following and has received the most attention of anyone, except maybe mohammed ali.

The best thing to say would be that there are a few people who stand out above the rest. Jordan, Gretzky, Pele, Ali, Michael Johnson, Babe Ruth, Walter Payton, Jim Brown, Wilt, Tiger, the list goes on...Maradonna would be there if his career werent filled with cocaine scandals.

Not to me, no one really watches basketball in my country. Some of the first ones to pop to my mind are Pele, Diego Maradona, Franz Beckenbauer, Michel Platini, Wayne Gretzky, Gordie Howe, Bobby Hull and Sergei Makarov.

I'll vote for Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Annika Sorenstam in golf

Nope, Wilt Chamberline is.

Plus there are loads more of athletes that are better than him. He also lost my respect when he continuly retired and came back and then experimented w/ other sports. That's not real love for the game.

Dr. J
Reggie Miller
Pete Marovich
Spud Webb
Olanozo Mourning
Karem Abdul Jabar

Loads were better than he'll ever be. And we have up and coming rookies and player that are soon to make it big and be better than him.

IE: Jermaine O'Neal
Vince Carter
Labron James

So I give MJ a big fat NO.

I wouldn't know I've never seen all the sports stars
17 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Sunday 1/30/05 - 1:55:56 PM EST (GMT-5)
"Lance Armstrong...if we're counting other sports."

Lance is good, but Eddy Merckx was better.

I read an article... it has to have been a year ago now, saying that Gretzky's overall greatness was a myth. It talked about what a weak defender he was using stats to show some kind of over/under thing. He was the most prolific scorer, but according to this article, Messier was more vital to the team's success.

In reading this question for the umpteenth time, it has occured to me for the first time that "star" and "athlete" are not synonymous. By that rationale, there are probably a lot of people whose status on the "star" list far exceeds their athleticism, and vice-versa. Dennis Rodman and Jim Thorpe are two who come to mind weho fgit into those two separate categories, respectively.

^Good point, but than I have to say that David Beckham has more "star" quality is known the world over.
17 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Monday 1/31/05 - 12:26:02 PM EST (GMT-5)
Probably the highest paid though.
17 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Tuesday 2/1/05 - 1:50:27 AM EST (GMT-5)
Jordan is the biggest NAME in sports ever. Bar none. More people in the world know his name than they do Santa Clause.
16 yrs ago, 11 mos ago - Tuesday 6/14/05 - 2:12:19 PM EST (GMT-5)
He'd be very close to the top, but i'd say either Mike Tyson or Mohammed Ali.
16 yrs ago, 11 mos ago - Tuesday 6/14/05 - 2:20:52 PM EST (GMT-5)
I'd say Bill Lee or Wally Weir.
16 yrs ago, 11 mos ago - Tuesday 6/14/05 - 2:23:24 PM EST (GMT-5)
Pele, definitely.

Sir Donald Bradman, too.

Damn, you can so tell I don't live in the USA

16 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Wednesday 7/6/05 - 8:20:18 PM EST (GMT-5)
Basketball wise, probably.

Baseball wise, nuh-uh.

16 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Friday 7/8/05 - 8:45:24 AM EST (GMT-5)
Cassius Clay, I'd say. Or Lance.
