Pele springs to mind--the greatest at the worlds most popular sport seems to be as good a definition as, any otherwise it's very hard to compare a swimmer with a darts player!! I think the greatest sportsperson of ALL TIME would at least be someone i've heard of so I can't see 'Lance Armstrong' getting the world vote!!!

Most North American sports stars would fail to qualify unless you prove that they're record is outstanding despite the fact that only two countries have ever heard of them--maybe Tiger Woods and Muhammed Ali are your only hopes.

It'd have to be someone great in many sports. MJ is the greatest or one of in his sport, but total athlete? Maybe Jesse Owens?
18 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Wednesday 7/30/03 - 9:14:39 PM EST (GMT-5)
hmmmmm i don't know him but if he is great at many sports its an excellent counter argument to what I said!

Says Howdy12: "many more....jackie robinson, lou gerigh, babe ruth, john elway, kobe bryant, yow ming(sp?),come on comapred to these guys michael jordon is a penny in a gutter." Uh, okay, uhm... no. Jackie Robinson broke the volor barrier. He is a far greater social changer, but his Hall of Fame career doesn't hold a candle to MJ. Lou Gehrig wasn't even the best in his own time in his own sport. Ruth is one of the people who compares to Jordan. If Elway hadn't won the Super Bowl in his last two seasons, which weren't his personal bests, aided by a superstar running back and a great team, you wouldn't even mention him, and you really shouldn't anyway. Kobe is 24 and has never been the consensus number one guy on his own team, nor has he ever won an MVP Paward or even a scoring championship. Yao Ming has played 1 season. So you go 1 for 6, and even Ruth is arguable.

Off the top of my head, Babe Ruth, Wilt Chamberlain, Jim Brown, Joe Montana, Wayne Gretzky, Pele, Carl Lewis, Michael Johnson, Muhammed Ali, Joe Louis, Sugar Ray Robinson, Martina Navratilova, and Bjorn Borg compare, but Jordan still might be deemed better than any of them.

hmmmmmm no Tiger Woods on that list--why not? Still, I think only Ali and Pele would rank internationally--some of the other guys never had to compete with the whole world in the same way as boxers, golfers, footballers and maybe tennis players!!!! Most of the world doesn't give a damn about basketball, it may be hard to believe, but you can't be the worlds greatest when only a few million are even trying.

I know a lot won't be in agreement here, but Herman Maier - the guy that broke his legs in a moto accident then came back to win the Grand Slalom (he is a skiier), and there is also Jonah Lomu. Since 1996 he has been playing with a very dangerous renal disease, but yet he is remains worldclass. Other rugby players for contention would have to include, IMO, Blanco of France and Robinson of England. Then there are the swimmers, Thorpe and Popov. Navratilova would also have to be in contention, along with Gebreselassie, El Guerrouj and Szabo

I'm with stylee so far. Michael Johnson's 200m record in Atlanta is the best sporting achievement I've ever witnessed, being surely the greatest smashing of a record in history.
18 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Thursday 7/31/03 - 5:13:50 AM EST (GMT-5)
he's the only one on the list that i've actually seen (earlestown market) but i'm not sure if he is the greatest sportsmen of all time, the world over!!!

Michael Johnson is definitly the greatest athlete in my opinion. his 200m and 400m records are outragous.
18 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Thursday 7/31/03 - 5:16:33 AM EST (GMT-5)
Oh wait, no - I take it all back. It's Geoff Capes.
18 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Thursday 7/31/03 - 6:58:52 AM EST (GMT-5)
Yeah, I'd add Tiger, glennh70. I just forgot him. I also can't really comment on most lesser-known sports.

Shirley Crabtree AKA Big Daddy!

Now that I think the question itself over,I might change my stance. The 'star' thing makes me think it's not only about athletics, but about popularity and marketablitiy. In that case, it is hard to argue against 23,even if he is not as widely known because of the revolution in sports marketing he set in motion

he's good but Nicky Hayden rocks
18 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Saturday 8/2/03 - 5:26:28 PM EST (GMT-5)
Its a tie between Mike and Ali. There GLOBAL impact is far greater than any other sports stars. Tiger, Wayne etc are great but golf isn't in the olypmics b/c most countries don't play and hockey is a very isolated almost north only sport.
18 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Saturday 8/2/03 - 5:52:45 PM EST (GMT-5)
Not a chance. Great basketball player but he wouldn't go one for me in basketball. Bill Russell ranks #1 for basketball because he is the personification of what is meant by team player and afterall, basketball is a team sport. That's not to diminish what MJ has done and what he means to basketball and sport. MJ might be the greatest "star" but I bet he would rather be recognized as the best in another way.

No, I think Wayne Gretzky is. He completely dominated the game.
