Maybe they can't afford to leave! Two Ist generation kids of Russian descent were tempted to return to the Soviet Union. Knowing that it would be a one way journey with no chance of repatriation one decided to go and tell the other how it really was. Because censorship would prevent any adverse criticism they devised a code. A letter in black would mean it was really ideal and a letter in Blue would mean that it was hell on Earth. After six months the guy who remained behind finally recieved a glowing report written in Black that ended sorry I took so long writing but I couldn't find any blue ink.

18 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Monday 11/18/02 - 4:05:53 AM EST (GMT-5)

Unlike that idyllic European antisemitism.
18 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Monday 11/18/02 - 5:52:05 AM EST (GMT-5)
well, that's the Germans for you. I think they are getting over it now.
18 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Monday 11/18/02 - 5:55:49 AM EST (GMT-5)
The Germans are far from the only Europeans that have an unnatural distaste for Jews.
18 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Monday 11/18/02 - 5:58:38 AM EST (GMT-5)
...and people from the USA actually fund anti Islam and anti Protestants.

The Europeans are far from the only continent that has an unnatural distaste for Jews.

18 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Tuesday 11/19/02 - 8:00:39 AM EST (GMT-5)
because it's fun and you take it sooo seriously.
18 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Tuesday 11/19/02 - 8:39:23 AM EST (GMT-5)
No its because Europeans are angry that their empires crumbled. They invaded, conquered and colonized most of the world and funded economic development by stealing their resources. Still the various European empires crumbled. Europeans are angry that America has largely developed through trade, innovation, and investment. America has aspired to become a nation that welcomes immigrants as well. Europe still does not. That is why American culture is so dynamic and why American institutions of learning are the very best in the world. And yes, the entire European continent has well over a millenium of anti-Semitic discrimination, persecution, and pogroms that culminated in the Holocaust. My grandparents, Jewish immigrants from Europe, told me I should always be grateful to America.
18 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Tuesday 11/19/02 - 8:45:46 AM EST (GMT-5)
tsurumi, I thought you had grandparents who were Ojibwa, surely you know that there is discrimination everywhere. Need I point out to you apartheid in SA or the black rights movement in the USA?
18 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Tuesday 11/19/02 - 8:47:06 AM EST (GMT-5)
Tsu, that was good until half way through the second paragraph when you decided to shove your head up your arse and see what your poo thought. American culture is not dynamic it is assymilative. American institutions are the most famous and best funded but are rarely regarded as the best in the world. America hasn't had a millenium of history in which to house racism. Similarly on the holocaust front, if America had actually taken part in WWII along with the rest of us as opposed to sitting about and trying to negotiate with the wrong side of a french civil dispute we might've resolved that a lot faster as opposed to having one solitary island fight the war. We really shouldn't go down this road, I'm glad your grandparents survived
18 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Tuesday 11/19/02 - 8:48:39 AM EST (GMT-5)
....you obviously have very specific definitions of development. You infer that America's development is equal to success. I would take issue with that. As for immigrants, the UK is well known throughout the world as being a haven for any asylum seeker....And when you talk about 'dynamic' American culture, I suppose you mean the great disparity in the distribution of the wealth in your country, and your gun culture. Nice. And stop trying to say that America is tolerant to other cultures..you just aren't. I have said it before, you are actively persecuting Muslims right now. Not to mention the funding of the IRA who slaughter innocent people. AND anti communism that caused you to be involved in a conflict that really was no business of yours, reulting in the deaths of many people, including thousands of your own young men.

Thank God that crackpot extremists aren't representative of the norm, no matter how much you'd like it to be.
18 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Tuesday 11/19/02 - 8:51:10 AM EST (GMT-5)
I'm three quarters Jewish and one quarter Ojibwa. I realize there is discrimination everywhere in every continent and that the US has a history of horrible discrimination that we are still getting over. The difference is that in the US we grapple and discuss these issues openly. And they are very difficult issues to grapple with. But in the end, I see America as a land that truly aspires to be multicultural. Europe, as a whole, definitely does not. Europe, as a whole, has a very fixed identity and I don't see Europeans openly discussing these issues and agonizing over them.
18 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Tuesday 11/19/02 - 8:51:29 AM EST (GMT-5)
Yeah, if it hadn't been for the US communism might've had a chance to thrive properly in the world
18 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Tuesday 11/19/02 - 8:52:59 AM EST (GMT-5)
maybe because you have never really seen the real europe. a fixed identity! ha! that shows how far up your own ass your head is. There is no fixed identity here. The French are very different from Estonians, British, etc.
