Not really (IMHO) People should know right from wrong and have the strength to stand by their principals. To become addicted, someone would first have to use something most likely more then once. Cigarettes are a possible excemption due to the fact that when they first came out, the general public was unaware of the dangers involved. I'm not saying that someone didn't know.. just that the genral public was ignorant of the fact. However, years later (our own present day for example), people are more informed of the risks and dangers invloved with using products or drugs with bad/terminal side effects. My stance of 'No Sympathy' comes from the fact that the average modern-day person has a vast assortment of research and can't easily claim ignorance.

No. They (drug addicts) did it to themselves.

I think it depends on teh drug, the reasons for starting, and their chances of quitting. I've known people who were essentially forced to start, and who have desperatly tried rehab, but it doesnt work for them. Those people I feel sorry for, cuz they actually try. The people that are too damn lazy to quit, well, I laugh at them then. They sometimes get mad enough at me that they quit JUST to spite me, heh.

Not heartless, but graceless, perhaps. Everyone knows the dangers of smoking/drugs. If they're an addict, it's their own stupid fault.

I'm heartless but I am not the norm so I'll say no.

Not heartless. They may be a little self-righteous, or maybe just inconsiderate of what someone else's life may be like. I mean, I think people should take responsibility for themselves, but to be completely unsymathetic toward someone whose life may be really difficult, and who is weak, is a kind of crumby.

99% of the people who take illegal/dangerous drugs can't claim ignorance for what might happen if they take those drugs. It's their own fault.

It doesn't have to be ignorance. You don't know what some people have to live through and may want to escape, no matter how stupid the decision to do so.

camelboy, I agree with your first post. I disagree with jrh's post up there because many people are still uninformed as to the specific risks of drug use. Many believe that they're only experimenting and don't see that they're sinking into drug addiction until they try to stop. Many people also begin this kind of behavior as teenagers. Teenagers do not always make well-informed decisions, and I believe aren't even capable of really understanding their own mortality. All of these mitigating circumstances are important, I think. No offense to any teenagers, by the way. I'm not calling you stupid by a long shot.

regarding cigarettes and alcohol jrh3068, people know the effects now and still start. I'd say people who have no sympathy are heartless: alot of people who become addicted to drugs have had alot of pain in their lives, and are using drugs as a form of escapism. To show no sympathy shows a deep lack of understanding of others. Everyone has vices, and everyone should try to empathise. In the past many of the worlds greatest minds have had an addiction of some sort.

Believe me, Camel. I've been there. I've never taken drugs, and I'm glad I haven't, because if I did when I wanted to I'd probably be a wasted piece of sh*t by now.

having said that ed_guitarboy it is difficult to feel sympathetic to a person who costs the taxpayer money through the extra strain they cause the NHS and who raise the crime rate by robbing and mugging to feed their addiction. Obviously this is not true for all drug addicts but certainly a significant percentage. Yes some may have had pain in their lives yes but dont we all at some stage? there are a great deal many more people out there to empathise with such as roy castle who died from lung cancer without ever having smoked a cigarette, starving people in africa, refugees...etc these people really do have hardship in their lives.

^true, but you are stereotyping drug addicts. Many heroine addicts hold down £50,000 a year executive jobs.

true so why should we feel sorry for them?
19 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Wednesday 8/13/03 - 5:12:52 AM EST (GMT-5)
If I stopped sympathizing with people who were drug addicted, then I would also have to do so for any person who would ever had alcohol touch their lips or smoked a cigarette. They too knew that those drugs are addictive, and could hook them from the start. I would also have to cut myself off from the overweight, or anyone who had a compulsion of any sort. In effect, 90 percent of the world would be cut off from me, and I don't want to live that way.

WHAT? are you drunk wisensexy? or on drugs?

I'm not heartless, and I totally feel for the families of seriously afflicted drug abusers, but I believe that one must reap what he/she sows. It's life.
