A woman has won a court fight to keep the placenta after her daughter's birth. She had planned to grind it up and ingest it as a way to fight postpartum depression, but now plans to bury it. Judge Johnson granted an injunction, ordering Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center to return the placenta to Anne Swanson. Hospital officials said they will comply.

The hospital had refused to give the uterine lining to Swanson following the birth of her daughter, with officials calling it contaminated biohazardous waste. The judge ordered the hospital not to destroy the placenta, which was frozen, and ordered that it be turned over to Swanson within two weeks. Swanson, who was 30 when she gave birth, originally wanted to give her placenta to a friend to be dried, ground into a powder and packed into capsules. She said she now plans to dry, store and eventually bury the organ instead of eating it.

Placentas? Powers of healing?! I really don't think so.
14 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Saturday 7/28/07 - 4:54:07 PM EST (GMT-5)

14 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Saturday 7/28/07 - 4:54:58 PM EST (GMT-5)
That's really nasty.
14 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Saturday 7/28/07 - 5:04:16 PM EST (GMT-5)
It's not nasty. Most mammals eat the placenta and lick their babies clean.

We've just "evolved" so far that there's no literal need to do that.

14 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Saturday 7/28/07 - 5:06:41 PM EST (GMT-5)
Yeah, so now it IS nasty.
14 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Saturday 7/28/07 - 9:24:17 PM EST (GMT-5)
animals eat their placentas
14 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Sunday 7/29/07 - 6:05:22 PM EST (GMT-5)
It's still not nasty. It's just simply unnecessary.

14 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Tuesday 8/28/07 - 1:25:57 PM EST (GMT-5)
I think it's a nasty thought, eating your own blood and excretement that came out of your vagina. It may be "natural" for animals to do it but last time I checked I wasn't a dog. yuck.

Don't they have stem cells in? They can heal in the right circumstances, (tho I doubt in the freeze dried form)

I don’t care how nutritious Placenta are, the whole notion of eating them is disgusting.

14 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Friday 12/14/07 - 1:59:27 PM EST (GMT-5)
They're probably nutritious, about as much so as eggs. (I wouldn't recommend eating them in bulk).

I also think it's disgusting, but I don't think it needs to be forbidden or anything.

14 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Monday 12/17/07 - 2:18:28 AM EST (GMT-5)
That's insane.
