Well, yes. Exactly like that. I don't really have anyplace to display a completed puzzle and so sometimes, when I'm bored, I like to get out a puzzle and work on it. But it's much easier for me to keep the corners and edges in a separate bag. I mean, think about it. I'm going to sift thru all the pieces one handful at a time and pick out all those pieces and put them on the table first and put them together first, anyway. All I'm doing is saving myself some time by cutting out the sifting.

I don't think it matters whether you're cheating or not if it's your second time doing the puzzle. But it's definitely cheating the first time around.

Geez, what a bunch of prudes. You're all reinforcing oppressive standards in the name of tradition and anachronistic values. As long as she's honest about storing the edge pieces separately and all parties she chooses to include accept those terms, it's not cheating. Her puzzle, her choice.

How exactly is it cheating the first time around? The puzzle isn't packaged with the edge pieces sorted out and bagged separately...
...not that I'd really call it cheating anyhow.

Cheating? I wasn't aware puzzles were games in *that* sense. I always saw them as more of a therapeutic-type activity, like coloring. Hard to really "cheat" at something like that.

That's what I was going to say. First time around, I have to sift thru all the pieces and put all the edges on the table. And no matter how carefully I pick thru them, I still always manage to miss one or two of the edge pieces.

I meant if you received the puzzle with some of it already sorted for you, that would be cheating.

All my jigsaw puzzles have like 32 pieces.

the only person you cheat is yourself
and also JIGSAUR, the god of jigsaws, who will tear you into a hundred pieces when you die and scatter them across the four corners of the earth, doomed to never be reunited

Will JIGSAUR at least separate and bag up my edge pieces?

Well, that'll never happen. The most prepared cheating you get in a new puzzle are when there are two or three pieces that weren't separated. Doesn't help much.

If it's the edge pieces that are giving your trouble, I hope you never have do do anything complicated in life. Like tying your shoes or something.

They don't give me "trouble." It's just that like most people, I like to do the outer edge first. And yes, I know the first time I put the puzzle together, I will have to sift out the edge pieces from the non-edge. But I do like to take puzzles apart and do them again later. So when I take the puzzle apart, I take off the edge pieces first and put them in a Ziploc. Then I just put the rest loose in the box. It's simply a time saver and nothing more.

Isn't the point of puzzles to waste time?

Oh, I don't know about that. I just have fun putting them together. If it were to waste time, then my great uncle wouldn't have bothered with them. He was really good at jigsaws. He'd have a 1000-piece puzzle together in a day. He could find the pieces that fit together in a snap. He probably wouldn't even need to separate out the edge pieces like I do.

I wouldn't really call it cheating if no one is deceived or disadvantaged by it. I'm not sure how they would be, unless you're actually in a jigsaw competition. I guess if you were bragging to people about your jigsaw completion time or something that'd be a bit untoward.
If it's something you do with your own time for fun, and you've cut out bits you don't find fun, meh.
