I think much of the answer is in WHY you're drinking, not in the frequency or caloric value.

Are you saying you're drinking as part of your diet or your diet made you realise how frequently you're drinking?
6 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Wednesday 3/18/15 - 10:10:34 PM EST (GMT-5)
my diet has curtailed my drinking. i was drinking often and heavily for a while there. like at least four a night for a week or two at a time. but now with my calorie counting i'm only having one or two, maybe three. if i was thinking about a healthy diet i'd have a hundred calorie fruit and veggie smoothie or something.

i'd like to say i drink out of habit. but it might be to quiet my mind too. i'm thinking that the sign of the alcoholic would be the adage of drowning one's sorrows. i don't know if i feel that i'm dealing with sorrows. i mean i have sorrow but we all do.

it might be a sociological reaction too, but that fits more in line with the notion of a habit. but i mean it might be not necessarily to deal with inner turmoil, but perhaps to be an affront to greater society. as opposed to spending my evenings buried in annals of cultural significance. to just lose sight of it.

Based on my understanding of alcoholism, no. An alcoholic is someone who is addicted to alcohol and must drink to excess when they have the opportunity. An alcoholic get's sh*t-faced drunk when they drink, they can't just have one or two.

doesn't number of drinks per week come into play at some point?

I doubt it, amaq. I'm sure you already know this, but I'll say it: Alcoholism doesn't come from just from how much you drink. It comes from your dependency on what you DO drink. A person could drink only one or two drinks a night and be an alcoholic. If you didn't have those two drinks for just one night, would you be having detox tremors? Would you be hallucinating because of withdrawal? Would you go and drink rubbing alcohol because it's the only alcohol you have access to? Would you even drink cologne because it has alcohol in it (though it's really not the right kind)? OK, you might be a little bit edgy if you don't have that drink to relax, but that's manageable. And I suppose there are others out there that can get falling-down drunk once in a blue moon and not become dependent. But that 's still dangerous territory.

How do I know all this? I had a friend who has been an alcoholic who did the things above. And I've been with another friend to a few AA meetings and others have mentioned things like this.

They even say a glass of red wine a day can be beneficial to your health!

appreciated bookworm. i'm not trying to diminish the significance of real alcoholism.

i might have though.

and i apologize.

Amaq might have meant more like 'a worry about becoming an alcoholic or alcohol dependent'.

I mean, I think what bookworm is describing is pretty much the rock-bottom of alcoholism. Lots of people are functioning alcoholics. I think it's a question of semantics. I don't think amaq's worries should be diminished because he's not at rock bottom.

I think the worry about being dependent on alcohol is relevant. I also put in a glass of wine into my calorie budget - - I do get the worry that there's a problem there.

i'm not looking for help.

OK, well here is my opinion: if you can drink one or two beers and then stop, you're not an alcoholic.

bookworm seems to think you need to go through the DTs to be an alkie, but I define it by the ability to stop.

An alcoholic can't just drink one or two beers. Once they start, they are drinking 'til they pass out.

Alcohol is additive, so is nicotine.

We don't discuss levels of nicotine dependance. Either you are a smoker or not.

If you drink everyday, then you are at least at risk of becoming a hard core alcoholic, you already have developed the habit.

Try giving it up for a week and see how that affects you. Not drinking for a week will tell you as much about your dependance on alcohol as not smoking for a week will tell you about your dependance on nicotine.

i'm not a scientist here.

No you're a pisshead.

You asked a question that only you can answer.

You can look for the answer or just muddle through and maybe the answer will find you somewhere down the line.

That happens a lot. Dependent drinkers find themselves in a difficult situation. Loss of job, break up of relationship and they respond by drinking more and that's when they start to unravel, because the dependance they built up snowballs out of control due to circumstances.
So they blame the circumstances and lose themselves in an alcoholic haze of self pitying depression.

Oh, I don't think you were diminishing anything. I just wasn't sure if you were really worried about it or not. Heck, if anyone should be worried about becoming an alcoholic, maybe *I* should watch myself. I'm one of those that after having a rotten day at work, will "need a drink" when I get home. That can lead to more excuses to drink. This happened earlier this week, even. Stopped at the liquor store for "drinking stuff." But I did want Bailey's anyway because it was St. Patty's Day. I've been good, though. I don't think I need to worry.

if you're drinking to the point where it's affecting your daily routine or adversely affecting others, then you're an alcoholic.

one or two drinks a night seems commonplace in some places in the world. my own parents drink a glass of red wine each night. if you're getting sloshed night after night then it's time to seek help.
6 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Friday 3/20/15 - 2:12:56 PM EST (GMT-5)
Because you are drinking every night, you feel you need it every night, right? If you feel you just need it to work right and cannot live without having that drink every night, then yes you are. If you don't need it and just want it, but can process easily without that timely drink, then no you aren't.

Alcoholics drink in secret and are shamed of drinking so much. Where a normal person can go to a liquor store and grap bottle of vodka, a alcoholic tries to hide it as much as possible.
Alcoholic won't stop hiding drinks or stop drinking in secret even if you tell it is alright to drink openly.

Speaking of experience from living with an alcoholic under the same house for 22 years.
