I know the size of the observable universe and the theoretical size of the rest of it but there is absolutely no way in hell I can make those numbers mean anything real.

Very well said.
I try every year to get students to comprehend how big a mole is. Its just incomprehensible. And then I get kids saying "I understand how big a number it is." and I'm thinking "Really, because I use that number all the time and I feel completely inadequate to understand it."
