He'll never be on the same playing field if he is accepted. Could you imagine him in the UFC? Hands are a crucial part of wrestling, without them you are pretty much up the creek. I'm sure he would be able to compete in a 'disabled' version of the sport though.

"Now after winning more than 100 wrestling matches at Collins Hill High School in Suwanee, Georgia, he wants to fight in mixed martial arts."

Not f*cking fair at all. Can you imagine going for a guy with no knees or elbows to lock up?

Mighty impressive... But thats wrestling biff.. MMA would kill him! Don't forget all the fighting styles that mma consists of, people would run rings around him and lay heavy blows that he simply couldn't defend.

I wonder what weight class he would be in?

Also, would he count as a grounded opponent? Because if he doesn't, you could just boot him in the head and it would be all legal..

Oh, I just found out one reason why:

A grounded opponent (as in, knee to the ground or otherwise not on their feet), by amateur rules (which he would be entering under) can't take a punch to the head or knee or kick at all. In other words, someone would have to reach down and punch his body by the rules.

Looks like he's pretty buffed, but I doubt he'd match the weight of a light. He'd probably be feather weight. Which doesn't really exist in mma..

ha, good point.. He can't stand, which is a vital flaw for any mma fighter, and he can't exactly get into ground and pound, cause he has nothing to pound with. So he'd be relying on submission tactics, and I just can't see him having an advantage over someone who has feet and hands!

Nup. This guy should not be in the mma. For his sake!

But if two people are on the ground, nothing is stopping one from punching the lights out of the other, so really all his opponent would need to do is lie down!

Well, I won't deny that he's good at grappling, but if that's ALL that his opponent is confined to doing, and disallowed from any practical strikes, then he should damn well be disallowed. It's an abuse of the rules, IMHO.

Exactly. If the opponent is restricted to grappling, that wouldn't be mma, that would be wrestling..

"Maynard trains Brazilian jiu jitsu with UFC veteran Diego Saraiva (9-5-1) and practices MMA at Hardcore Gym in Athens GA;"

Well maybe he does do more than wrestle, but I'd like to see footage of that!?

If they just give him a chance to prove himself this will either quickly deal with itself... or they'll have a new superstar on their hands.

It's pretty much win/win.

I say let him compete.

Not much. His lawyers' arguments seem to stem from the basis that he's not going to be punched or kicked as a grounded guy, and that they'll just be trying to grapple with him.

""He can defend against any technique that can be used against him and actually has somewhat of an advantage in some cases," his attorney said. "A lot of the techniques the fighters use focus on the arms and legs – arm bars, knee bars. It grossly limits the ability of the other fighters to attack him."

Ahhhh... So they really want to change around some of the rules to suit his needs. Tsk.

'He can defend against any technique that can be used against him'

Which is nothing other than grappling!? I think he's bitten off more than he can chew, and it would be a bit insulting to an mma fighter to forget all they've learnt and do nothing other than wrestle when fighting him.

Its not that I doubt the man isn't good at his trade, its just I'm certain that if pro mma rules applied to him, he would be destroyed, and if they didn't - that would be unfair.

If he wins his fight, it makes the sport look bad. and if (I really mean when) he gets his face smashed in, there will be a political uproar. I admire his spirit, but it's pretty selfish on his part. And there is no way he could end a fight. If he somehow gets you down, he lays on you, it gets stood up. Sooner or later he's getting mashed.

On the other hand...he might be a good way for Elvis Sinosic to get in the win column
