HMO you need referrals to see doctors, you must stay within the HMO network, most plans just have a copay, and there is very rarely a deductable.

PPO you can go in or out of the PPO network, you may have a deductable and coinsurance when going out of network, very rare do you have deductable and coinsurance in network, mostly just copays, and you do not need referrals.

I work for Blue Cross Blue Shield, and I understand there is more too it, but this is just a general idea of each plan.

Isnt this qu. a bit narrow, regards other countries? If i was to add a complete UK qu., it'd never get accepted. Sorry for being petty, but you know!

There are several UK only questions on here, so get over yourself.
I am in an HMO and am fairly happy with it...well, other than the 10% per year rate increases.

I know what you mean. My questions have been rejected a couple of times for mentioning Canada, even when they involved other countries. But anyway, I don't really understand HMO and PPO. I found the explanation he gave a bit confusing...

I heard HMO's aren't that great. I would much rather have the PPO.

I'd rather have ANY insurance what-so-ever.

My current health care policy is "don't get sick".
