I guess music.

Music is much easier. You can write lyrics on an envelope, then repeat and repeat. Add a few chords, and vvvwaalla. It's a song.

Someone should have told Beethoven and saved him the trouble.

I don't think either are, myself. Music is simply a different language.

Ugh, do I have to choose? They're both so different! But I might say writing because there are more forms of it: poetry, short stories, novels... well, maybe nonfiction books don't fit in "art", but you get my point.
16 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Monday 6/26/06 - 7:20:42 PM EST (GMT-5)
Higher form of art? But most music is not art at all it seems. There is some great art of music. There is some great art of writing. There is so much more strands of writing and levels to it... but to class either as higher than the other is wrong. They are both good, yet different. Writing is great, but it cannot achieve or involve things that music can. And vice versa.

If I had to pick a side, it'd be music though.

"Music says what words cannot" - Mendelssohn. I'm with him I think.

I like how it's a more abstract language, freed from literal concepts.

16 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Monday 6/26/06 - 7:28:01 PM EST (GMT-5)
I don't think either one is 'higher', but I think music is probably a lot harder, since it's a totally new language, that involves writing and performance. Writing itself is only committing language to paper.
16 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Monday 6/26/06 - 7:35:23 PM EST (GMT-5)
You mean music involves more people? Not necessarily harder. Think about it. Writing music and playing it are two different skills to learn. Writing involves many different skills too. Music doesn't have characterisation or plot or anything like that to worry about.
16 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Monday 6/26/06 - 7:36:42 PM EST (GMT-5)
I'd have to go with music on this one.

I'm not sure I agree. The way most classical works are structured and work implies both of those things, just on an abstract level. Just look at the way a Mahler symphony works.

Fair enough... but writing can go far deeper into it. Writing can also input far more meaning. I'm gonna get slated for saying that, but it's true. Music can be very expressive, but writing can make points and convey stuff far more intricately and effectively and complexly.
16 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Monday 6/26/06 - 8:02:01 PM EST (GMT-5)
I would think music.

Cavemen could make grunting noises and bang rocks. Writing takes a higher level of intellect.

Writing.

Actually, I find music to be easier.
Neither. Both are so different, and as I do both, I think they're pretty much equal in my experience.

Good writing is very difficult and has more meaning, but both are art. I don't think either one is "higher" then the other.
15 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Friday 11/24/06 - 8:13:25 PM EST (GMT-5)
There is some music that is a higher form than some writing, but some writing that is higher than some music. For example, poetry that really makes you think might be considered higher than pop music. However, music like Meditation de Thais by Massenet would be considered higher than books about pink unicorns. I'm not saying that everyone has to think this, these are just examples.

Music by far.

Sighs. "I would really know which to choose. I am more of the visual from of art. I think maybe music because it would be difficult to express meaning with out words. But yet writing as well because sometimes it difficult to express meaning with words.. so either way is great."

I would want to say they can be very equal but as that isn't a choice...
Everybody seems to be going straight to music.

But I don't know. I love music but I would think twice about that.

I am saying writing. Sure music can express things that writing can't but I am thinking writing can say a larger range of things.

My anital reaction is music, as I just love it it's my life! But I do love writing as well. Too close to call.
15 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Friday 12/8/06 - 5:29:38 PM EST (GMT-5)
Both are forms of art to me. I wouldn't consider one higher then the other. I just think in this day and age people connect more with music rather than writing so they choose music.
