i think thisa world is crap they take the reality of rape and turn it into fiction in some sick kindof creul way.its like they erase it from minds of all people who belive outside and who have their own opinion its like if you dont belive what the rest of the corrupt world belives and anti_social and an outkast and that exactly what i just saaid probly confused you but that is because its the truth of the world and shows their concepts on rape

No, it confused me because it is meaningless jabber that desperately needs spell check. Tell me, how do they turn it into fiction and erase it from people's minds?

I agree with people that it is often downplayed by blaming the victim, and to a point it is true that some cases could have been avoided if not for the victims actions. However, that SHOULD NOT remove any blame from the rapist because even in the rare case where the victim was drunk/drugged/etc. and their choices "allowed" the crime to occur, it is still the criminal that commited the crime, and the responsibility and blame should be his.

AMEN

In some cases, yes. We don't so much *completely* excuse it as we try to point the finger at the rape victim by blaming them for their clothing, "promiscuous trollopty" behavior, or level of drunkenness. Although rape isn't something that we take lightly, I don't think it's always taken seriously *enough*. We recognize that it's horrible, but people obviously don't understand HOW horrible it is, considering how quick they are to blame the victim.

Even in groups where emancipation is deemed important there is a huge "not in my backyard" attitude.
So when any kind of harassment happens it is denied.

Of course our society excuses rape. That's why they let rapists get out to do it over and over again.
16 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Monday 4/10/06 - 6:17:53 AM EST (GMT-5)
I don't think it excuses it but perhaps doesn't act upon it harshly enough.

Yes and no. We definitely don't respect women equally and consistenly within our culture. They're alternately coddled, objectified, demonized, and deified. We send inconsistent messages and it results in mistreatment. In that regard, yes, we excuse rape.
OTOH, rape is very traumatic for the victim, but that doesn't mean we don't investigate and check the veracity of the rape claim. A rape victim has to lie still on an examination table while the police ask her questions and some ER nurse swabs her when what she'd really like to do is grab a scalpel and barricade herself in a corner. Psychologically, the same tone exists throughout the justice process. A rapist is just as entitled to defend himself as any other person, and claiming the sex was consensual is a pretty reasonable defense to pursue. If bringing up evidence of it being consensual includes claims that she "wanted it," etc, that's not excusing rape; that's a part of the justice system.

It was a joke (I'm assuming).
I understand how you might not have caught the humor, though, considering how crude and irrelevant to the topic it was.

it happens so much we've become used to it because it happend everyday. but we should be trying to stop it more. instead of just being desensitised by it .

If we did it wouldn't be against the law.

Im always shocked by how light many of these prison sentences are... the women who have been raped have to deal with that for the rest of their lives but the scum who do it to them get away with a 4 year sentence. Its hard enough for victims to come forward in the first place without having to doubt if any justice will actually be done.

Which culture, US punishes rapist and the rapist is a social leper, expect in Hollywood. Iraq, Iran and a few other countries use it as a form of punishment or control over their people. In the Mid East some women are stoned or honor killed by male family members after being raped. So I guess, yes some cultures excuse rape and use it to whatever fits

I cannot stand the ones who are quick to say, "Shehe was wearing this, she/he was doing that, etc; she/he asked for it!"
Bullcrap!
I'm sure the same line would not even be liable in a murder. "He/she was doing this; He/she asked to be killed!"

Rapists sometimes do seem to get off easy.

I say we let them rot in jail with no parole or bail.

[end rant.]

It sure seems like it, but it's impossible to get rid of.

Yes, there is often a blame the victim attitude.

Good answer, I agree. A woman should not be looked at as "easy" or a "target" because of the way she is dressed or how drunk she is. There is no right to take advantage of a person like that.
