Do you think that affirmative action and other special privileges for minorities will ultimately cause resentment from those who aren`t minorities?

I'm sure the person passed over due to his skin color or gender in favor of a minority is resentful.

I would say that it's already starting to do that. As a matter of fact, I know it is.
16 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Saturday 2/11/06 - 5:15:01 PM EST (GMT-5)
it is happening...in spanish and b/c of that i get a hell of a lot more opportunity for scholarsihps and other grants to help me get to college than lets say my white friends.

Minorites? I don't think there are any special privileges for teenage meteorites.

First, I don't think there are any teenage meteorites. Second, you obviously haven't applied for any scholarships while attending a school made up of mostly minorities (my hs class was 78% hispanic... and guess who had scholarship preference?)

Yeah, no sh*t, white people haven't stopped bitching since we abolished slavery.

If I were a minority and got a job beause of Affirmative Action, I'd be pissed off that I didn't get the job because of my *qualifications*.

Nobody gets their job BECAUSE of Aff. Action. It's not as though they would hire ANY Black person in favour of a white person. All applicants for the job must be considered as capable of having the skills to do the job.

Aff. Action is necessary *when combined* with other strategies designed to change attitudes. It is unfair that workplaces must meet a quota (based on the population of whatever country you live in.)....but considering that only a few decades ago open racial discrimination was widespread. Do you think that attitudes can change that quickly? I don't think so. Part of making Aff. Action work is too educate the majority on WHY it's necessary. Otherwise you are right.....It does cause resentment.

Oh, and I seriously doubt anyone would be pissed that they just got a job, gimme a f*cking break.
16 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Thursday 4/6/06 - 9:36:59 AM EST (GMT-5)
It's already happening. Some people (key word "some) who aren't minorities are already resentful because of the "breaks" minorities are supposedly getting. More than anything else, people are upset because of this obsession over "diversity" a lot of companies have. It makes it seem like race is more important than qualifications (though it is not).

But the less qualified minority WILL get the job over the more qualified white. This is what pisses people off.

think of it this way. You aren't supposed to point out the differences of people conpaired to the average person, so the average person is basicly the only one who can be pointed out. so yes
16 yrs ago - Sunday 5/28/06 - 7:33:13 PM EST (GMT-5)
There's already resentment about such things, as fantasized about in extremist, right-wing circles.

I would. If I got a job that someone else was better qualified for, just because they wanted "diversity", I would be outraged.

Yeah, I'll add a "next, please" to this one.
16 yrs ago - Saturday 6/17/06 - 3:27:18 AM EST (GMT-5)
Already has.

I think people should *earn* their jobs, and being a minority doesn't count as proving how you actually deserve the job. Maybe you ARE lazy and loud and a pain in the ass, and I think it's pretty fxcking sorry that the fear of appearing racist is interfering w/ other people who are legible to actually get to job from getting one.

It happens here in Australia all the time. I know lots of people who harbour strong resentment for Aboriginals because they get certain privellages that the rest of society doesnt get. I also know Aboriginals who lie and say they're not Aboriginal because they also dont think its fair and think its creating more segregation in society.

My question is how is anyone supposed to come to the conclusion that he or she was less qualified than someone else that didn't get the job? So, because the person is black he or she is supposed to automatically assume that he or she was a lesser candidate than the white man or woman that applied for the same job?

16 yrs ago - Saturday 6/17/06 - 6:54:59 AM EST (GMT-5)
^Why, that would be reverse reverse racism!
