The funniest thing to me is that the brands that promote 'non-conformity' conform to their style... and the brands that promote 'individuality' sell their same items to everyone as well. If it was truthful... neither would be a 'marketing tool.'

I find that marketing or advertising something as non-conformist is an oxymoron. Why would you advertise (a mass form of communication) about something that is essentially in opposition to the masses?

^^ because middle/high schoolers are stupid enough to think that they're "unique"/"punk"/&quo t;goth" from buying a pair of pants 200 other people have at hot topic.

Individual expression. It'll appeal to more people than the non-conformity would. It will also appeal to the non-conformists. So, it wins!

And now for the non-conformist code, everyone repeat after me: I am unique... It's the illusion of non-conformity they are selling. Ya'll weren't thinking marketing might be about something *real* were you?

They're both good marketing for adolescents who prefer to create a sort of individuality compared to their mothers and fathers. Which means that non-conformity is what they seek, but anything against what their parents choose is fine.

I've always found it amusing that the "non-conformists" are all wearing major corporate brands across their heads, backs and T-shirts. Always raises a wry smile from me.

Individuality and non conformity are two very similar things in one aspect: they are both relative. They are relative only to the individual. To be an individual you do not have to go way the drat out on an extreme, you just have to be yourself and not care what people think. I personally enjoy dressing goth and being metal core. This is not because i want people to look at me as different, its cuz I want to look at me as different. There is nothing wrong with expression.I realize that had nothing to do with the question, but i wanted to say it anyway.

For a company to sell actually individual/unique clothes, every piece would have to be one-of-a-kind. And getting people to not follow the crowd would generally start a new crowd of non crowd followers .. right?

Non-conformism.. The people who buy individualistic type of stuff usually have an exceptionally bleak outlook towards life. They would be more likely to want something that says "I'm NOT this" than "I am this". Whether or not they are or aren't anything isn't the point...

What I think is funny is that the majority of kids my age at school act/dress all vegan/goth/emo/punk/anarchist/atheist/et c. and call themselves non-conformist. The trouble is, everyone at my school is vegan/goth/emo/punk/anarchist/atheist, so they're kind of contradicting themselves.

Since Indicidual Expression is used so often as an excuse, I'd say that makes the better tool.

The misc. crowd is untapped. We have to borrow clothes from other groups.
