Which is more important in determining how successful a person is: whether or not a person is happy, or how much a person contributes to society as a whole?

This could be looked at in two ways. I first thought of the person being happy, but if they go through their entire life being extremely selfish and uncaring towards society, then that woud not be a good thing.

On the other hand, I wouldn't want someone to go through their life contributing to society. Some sort of personal fufillemnt must be reached at some point. Maybe there is a happy medium

Hmm. Well, some people can be made happy by really crappy things, so I'd have to say that it depends on how they have acquired this happiness.

Happiness but they need to consider the happiness of others when they do it.

I agree, however, I think contributions to society are more important then personal happiness. How much you make OTHERS happy is more important.
