I'm getting sick of it - unless you were patriotic before 9/11, it doesn't count now. I get so mad at all the idiots driving around this town with American flag stickers on their foreign cars - I doubt even 3/4 of them had those stickers on before 9/11. I refuse to put up flags or yellow ribbons, it seems like a meaningless gesture to me.

^ I 100% agree with kikipeepers.

Although I am somewhat shocked to say it, I agree with both ^^

I've hated this fake patriotism since it started the day after 9/11. It's dying down now, but it still really, really bothers me..
18 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Tuesday 8/10/04 - 12:59:06 PM EST (GMT-5)
"I doubt even 3/4 of them had those stickers on before 9/11."

I don't see why that makes any difference. Patriotism was always just as hollow as it is now.

Patriotism is fine. Unfortunately, many think that patroitism and nationalism are one in the same.
18 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Tuesday 8/10/04 - 1:05:08 PM EST (GMT-5)
^True that, although there can still be too much and it can still be overdone.
18 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Tuesday 8/10/04 - 8:03:50 PM EST (GMT-5)
Overrated and frightening. Patriotic right now just means nodding your head to whatever the president says.
18 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Friday 8/27/04 - 11:10:23 PM EST (GMT-5)
I do agree that being patriotic has become somewhat over-rated but in some cases I understand it. Around here there are alot of people with family members off in the military right now and I don't blame them for hanging their yellow ribbons and flying a flag.
18 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Friday 8/27/04 - 11:13:33 PM EST (GMT-5)
I've never been very patriotic, and since the war started, i've become less patriotic. I think it is over-rated, especially since most of the people you see waving the American flag would never consider dying for their country in the first place!
18 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Friday 8/27/04 - 11:20:27 PM EST (GMT-5)
For some reason, it seems to me that people are "being patriotic" (or trying to give an impression of patriotism) because they fear accusations of being "un-American." (e.g. if you didn't put bumper stickers of the American flag on your car after 9/11, you must be un-American). Of course, I know that this is not necessarily true, but it is the impression that I have for some reason been given.
18 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Friday 8/27/04 - 11:29:59 PM EST (GMT-5)
^^I get that impression, too. And what really pisses me off is hearing all of these country singers singing about the war and crap about how you should defend your country when they aren't even doing it!
18 yrs ago - Tuesday 9/28/04 - 8:51:32 PM EST (GMT-5)
Well peepers you obviously don't ahve family fighting in Iraq so you shoudln't be hanging yellow ribbons. Lot's of us however do and I'm going to do whatever i can to show the people i love that I'm thinking of them while there over there fighting this stupid war. When i see a yellow ribbon on the back of somebody's car it makes me think about the friends and family i haven't seen for months.
18 yrs ago - Tuesday 9/28/04 - 8:52:15 PM EST (GMT-5)
I myself am proud to be an American, I have a whole lot of Patriotism but that doesn't necesarily mean I'm just the government's flunky. I hate George Bush and everything he stands for but I'm not gonna let one president make me lose all hope and pride for our country.
18 yrs ago - Wednesday 9/29/04 - 8:21:47 PM EST (GMT-5)
What does your yellow ribbon do to bring your loved ones home from Iraq? Not a damn thing, it's a totally meaningless gesture. Do you really need a ribbon for your family members to know you support them? Just like, do you really need a flag sticker on your car to let people know you love your country? Of course not, but people act that way for some weird reason. Herd mentality.
18 yrs ago - Thursday 9/30/04 - 10:05:38 AM EST (GMT-5)
Not over-rated, although it's always been as pointless as it is.
17 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Saturday 12/25/04 - 2:19:49 AM EST (GMT-5)
I love the people who have pink, yellow, flag, orange, red and other ribbons plastered all over thier $50G foreign car.
17 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Saturday 12/25/04 - 3:03:48 AM EST (GMT-5)
^^^HuH? There's a grapic you don't see on a message board every day!!
Ok...I'll pretend I don't see that, and say Thank You Kiki! You said that all in a way that I never could!
17 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Saturday 12/25/04 - 4:32:49 AM EST (GMT-5)
"Being a patriot" has become redefined to mean being a sheep or a flag waver. It's become a hollow and empty term. I'm with Kiki.

(I love the irony of saying "I'm with..." after calling people sheep.)

17 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Friday 1/21/05 - 10:43:33 AM EST (GMT-5)
man, that bird looks pist.. "Stop, you're frightening him!"
17 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Tuesday 2/8/05 - 2:24:22 PM EST (GMT-5)
I think patriotism is a great thing! It's good to take pride in your country. After all, you are living there. Shouldn't you like or be proud of where you live? If that isn't true, then there's definitely a problem.
17 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Tuesday 3/8/05 - 10:18:59 AM EST (GMT-5)
let me give you an example of English patriotism. I'm English not British - don't associate me with the Welsh or the Scots.
17 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Tuesday 3/8/05 - 10:26:25 AM EST (GMT-5)
I have always been patriotic even way before 9/11 but I do get upset that all of a sudden every one is.
17 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Tuesday 3/8/05 - 10:27:39 AM EST (GMT-5)
I don't think it's become overrated, but I do believe it has become sort of a fad to be patriotic since 9/11.
17 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Monday 4/4/05 - 1:46:00 PM EST (GMT-5)
I dislike it when people say 'I am proud to be a/an...' It's like ok you should liek your country but it's notyhing to be poud of that you were born in an area of the world where about another few million people were. It's no like you saved a life or anything.
I am not proud of being born where i was. not taht i am ashamed i like my country but whats there to be proud of? It's a country! Thats why i think patriotism is silly. i you liek your own country only then of course there will be racism etc.
