I don't know much about this, but it doesn't sound very appropriate.

modern day germany is not allowed to have any national pride? big deal, its a song. its not like they are singing a song with lyrics like "nazis rule / kill the jews"...

I agree with taphophile. From what a foreign exchange student once told me, Germans aren't allowed to express very much pride in their country. Why not allow them the anthem?

Is it any different to Rule Britannia or others smiliar? It's a song...a national anthem. All national anthems boast national pride and all that's great within it's boundaries.

ALL WRONG! The German national anthem goes by the melody of Haydn´s "Kaiser-Quartett". The first two verses (including the Germany above all part) have been forbidden to be sung (!) since WWII. The title and words to the old melody nowadays is only the original third verse "Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit" meaning "unity, justice and liberty".

The Irish national anthem (it's in Irish)(obviously) (or maybe not so obviously) is about fighting the Saxons (English). Since we're friendly with England should we change that also? One of the WWE wrestlers made an ass of himself two weeks ago in Munich he goose stepped around the ring & made nazi salutes. He got sacked from CNBC. Not sure if charges have been pressed yet.

"Some people in Europe still find 'Germany above all' offensive". That could be offensive, yes. Thanks, Matthias; if it weren't for you I would have blundered.

I like the German national anthem. Everything can be offensive when taken too far.

I think they should be allowed to sing it. It just shows pride in their country.

Maybe although most countries do have a 'we're the best' national anthem. I only think it's wrong because it was the Nazi one.

Germany/Netherlands soccer games are always volatile, same as England/Scotland or England/Germany.

It does sound like stupid lyrics. But which country doesn't have stupid lyrics in their anthem? I live in a country were we sing that we are Germans.

"Some people in Europe still find 'Germany above all' offensive and there was a lot of whistling at the German anthem during their soccer game with Holland." As if that's not the attitude of every country? How P.C. are people supposed to get? And it's the Netherlands. N E T H E R L A N D S Holland is a region in the Netherlands, not the country's name.
