Can someone explain to me why this question has an expiry date?

The dead are still going to be dead in five years time so the issue is never going to change.

It's actually lower than I thought it would be.

And no, bored, I can't explain that, sorry

wellllll

higher than the leaders of the coallition led us to believe.. and around averaage for what we thought as we were being taught tactics about the war..

soldiers really aren't suprised by the toll....

the tense reads as though soldiers are currently in Iraq--may not be in a year or three.

try replacing 'Iraq' with 'the Gulf war' or 'the Falklands' and see how it sounds.

I don't see the tense as an issue.
It is an ongoing situation and there is no forseeable end to it. Certainly not in 151 days.

When the issue finally becomes a past situation the casualty rate will still be an ever present issue. Soldiers that are dead today, will still be dead tomorrow.

Key members questions are not supposed to expire unless the question becomes out of date.

Claiming that the grammar of a question will expire is absurd.

If you come into a thread, come in to answer the question, don't come in to attack another member.

I would say the death toll is exactly as it should be. No more or less. It will rise via it's natural path.

How can anyone predict how many soldiers will lose their lives in 'x-amount of time' and whether or not this or isn't as expected or if it's acceptable or not? This is war. No matter how carefully planned and carried out, nothing is foolproof, guaranteed or foreseeable.

War = people dying (in great numbers).

This is why no army should be in Iraq in the first place.

I suppose foir me it is higher than I thought it would be. I think it comes from some delusion that I've had since the first Gulf War, when there was a lot of talk about how few casualties there were. I guess I had it in my head, stupidly, I admit, that modern war wasn't as hands on.

its actually much lower than I expected. But, then I expected us to "shock and awe" with about four times as many troops as we used.
18 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Friday 5/7/04 - 6:13:01 AM EST (GMT-5)
Way lower. Compare it to past wars.

I suppose it's about at the rate I expected it to be, although I will admit that I did not expect actual combat to last as long as it is. I guess that was pretty naive of me.
18 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Friday 5/7/04 - 7:16:35 AM EST (GMT-5)
no, no - that was realistic. Because the mission is accomplished and the war is over, so there's no more combat. Don't sell yourself short there, ohlefty.
18 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Friday 5/7/04 - 7:29:25 AM EST (GMT-5)
Well, I'd have thought the Actual War would have lasted longer. But I did kind of think that there would've been a logical reason to declare it "over," instead of this crap about how the war has officially ended but yet the death toll rises and rises. That's what surprised me, I guess.

I think it is higher then what I expected.

I'm not surprised at all. There's always too many innocent lives lost in war, anyways.
17 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Saturday 10/30/04 - 1:27:23 AM EST (GMT-5)
Honestly, I'm shocked that no one completely nuked the world in retaliation. So I'd have to say lower.
17 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Saturday 10/30/04 - 2:08:27 AM EST (GMT-5)
I don't think the toll is as high as i thought it would be in the beginning!
17 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Sunday 1/2/05 - 6:21:10 PM EST (GMT-5)
I am posting this from Baghdad and I can truly say that the number of Coalition troops that have died is nowhere near the number of stupid Hajjis that are plastered all over the streets.
17 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Sunday 2/27/05 - 3:18:27 AM EST (GMT-5)
the mission is accomplished? all we've done is piss off a good majority of people in the world and screwed our allies to pieces...real great accomplishements there...oh, and we have a democracy that will probably last, what, all of 10 years at tops? sorry that this is gonna tick a lot of yall off, but the US isn't going to stay on top of the world for the rest of eternity, and when it falls enough, the entirety of the middle east is gonna fall to pieces even more than it is right now
