evil doesn't exist in nature
18 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Friday 4/23/04 - 5:22:06 AM EST (GMT-5)
Inherently evil rather than naturally evil. I believe on a whole that serial killers are evil.
18 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Friday 4/23/04 - 5:24:13 AM EST (GMT-5)
Might be both 8)

I don't know if I believe in the concept of evil as a natural phenomenon, but I believe that circumstances can make a person behave in a manner we'd typically describe as 'evil' without having an exaggerated mental illness.

Seriously disturbed individuals for sure. If people keep humiliating children, crushing the spirit and body of a child to the point where eventually they turn into sadistic killers then maybe we should look for ways to make sure that children are supported and are not abused by their families.

the two are the same thing in this situation
18 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Saturday 4/24/04 - 9:05:27 PM EST (GMT-5)
most serial killers are in fact mentally ill. There are some that honestly can't decipher right from wrong, but those are few and far between. Most of them know the difference, but they can't stop. It's like an addiction, a weird sort of rush that they get.

Sorry...big into the whole serial killer bit, I've read up on them a lot.

^before I get myself into sh*t, I find them interesting, not that I would dream of doing it myself.
18 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Saturday 4/24/04 - 9:07:32 PM EST (GMT-5)
I think they just want to do something with themselves that no one else understands, or does, but don't have the guts to go through with themselves.
18 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Saturday 4/24/04 - 9:10:14 PM EST (GMT-5)
i'm sure any famous serial killer taken as a baby, raised by a loving family and given a different upbringing would almost certainly not become a serial killer anyway.

I'm certain it's more about circumstances than anything inherent.

In fact it is ussually circumstance. Did you know many of our greatest heroes are in fact sociopaths.

Cops, firemen, and people in other dangerous extreme jobs are quite often sociopaths. Sociopaths have dulled emotions and it takes extremes for them to really feel anything.

Give a sociopath a negative growth environment and well you can guess what happens.

Give them a positive one however and well much good can come from them.

As for being insane. Well anybody can snap under enough duress.
18 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Wednesday 4/28/04 - 12:21:45 PM EST (GMT-5)
It has to be a flaw in the head...not insane, but something not totally normal.
18 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Thursday 4/29/04 - 12:18:02 PM EST (GMT-5)
Some of the people who became such knew that they could get away with it.

And that is the only reason.

18 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Thursday 4/29/04 - 6:04:40 PM EST (GMT-5)
I think ill or insane.
18 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Friday 4/30/04 - 3:29:28 AM EST (GMT-5)
Evil. Most mentally ill people never harm anyone but themselves.
18 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Friday 4/30/04 - 3:31:02 AM EST (GMT-5)
Do you really think anyone here is fit to judge?
18 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Friday 4/30/04 - 3:41:23 AM EST (GMT-5)
I think they are naturally insane, its something they cant do anything about. Apparently a scan of a killers brain is different to a sane persons brain. Its something to do with the amount of activity that goes on in a certain part of the brain that differs or something like that.

to answer the question, we must first establish what is meant by "evil". from a naturalistic standpoint, there is no such thing as "evil". it is merely a concept invented by humans to describe things which they do not personally approve of for one reason or another (usually emotional or religious reasons). so if we take the naturalist view, then serial killers cannot be inherently evil because there is no such thing as evil. also, we have to examine the real definition of "insane". truthfully, from a completely naturalist view, humans are just another animal...just another piece of nature. and in this nature, there is no such thing as "ultimate right and wrong"...only SUBJECTIVE right and wrong...so there can really be nothing INHERENTLY "wrong" in killing. it is only viewed as "wrong" or "evil" by society based on emotional arguments or subjective logic.
18 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Friday 4/30/04 - 3:44:21 AM EST (GMT-5)
therefore, perhaps serial killers are more sane than we'd like to admit. perhaps they realize the true nature of reality even moreso than the bulk of society does, and they simply decided to act upon their realization and treat humans as just another piece of nature to be manipulated however they please.

that's not to say that i approve of serial killing though, by any means. just to say that it might not actually be INHERENTLY and OBJECTIVELY "wrong" or "evil", and at the same time might actually be more the product of uncommonly focused sanity than of any sort of INsanity.

still...i personally don't approve of serial killing. that's my own personal judgement that it is "wrong", which i admit is completely subjective and based mainly on emotion and feeling. but still...

They are mentally ill.
18 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Tuesday 5/4/04 - 7:17:00 PM EST (GMT-5)
I just think they had problems in their childhood causing them to have a different view of the world.
18 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Wednesday 5/5/04 - 12:13:17 PM EST (GMT-5)
no such thing as evil, that's a myth passed around by religious types because it makes life easier if you have someone/something to blame.

Can you handle life?

18 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Wednesday 5/5/04 - 12:16:25 PM EST (GMT-5)
Most have serious mental problems.
18 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Wednesday 5/5/04 - 12:22:35 PM EST (GMT-5)
There is an article about a psychiatrist who deals with serial killers in The Times today. Has anybody read it?
