Mine is only four letters and it is slaughtered all of the time. That and they get the nationality wrong all of the time. People usually think it is asian.

Yes, they do it constantly. I eventually changed the pronountiation to something easier, and more simpler

i have the same problem as TheWanderer. it's doubly annoying because it's a common english word, but people always seem to spell and pronounce it like the german translation, which is more common as a last name.

I can think of maybe 4 or 5 people in my life that DIDN'T royally screw it up. I think the only people that have ever gotten it right are non-Americans, because the long-voweled English pretty much insures that it will be pronounced incorrectly.

Yes, they often do, but I don't really understand why--my last name is Pitcock, and it's pretty much spelled phonetically. I don't see how it's possible to mess that up, but I commonly get anything from "Peacock" to "Pictock" to anything in between. It's going to be even worse when my fiance and I get married. His last name is Doneske, which people *always* have a problem both pronouncing and spelling.

It's hyphenated, and the hyphen really throws people off for some reason.

In America, Hawes would be pronounced "Hahhz," like "ha," as in the word representing laughter, but plural...so it wouldn't be as bad here.
