If one looks to the media, then, yes, it is. Not only are regular fashion models growing thinner with each season, but "plus size" models--once a separate facet of the modelling industry which featured size 12+ women--is now simply a runoff industry for size six models who have breasts larger than B cup.

However, I and many women I know do not base our judgments of our beauty on the cover of Vogue and Sports Illustrated; we base it on how comfortable we feel in our own skin and how much attention we get from men. The media represents only a small fraction of the kinds of beauty possible in this world; to be polished and thin and tall is not THE only standard of beauty that it is possible to fulfill.

I seem to be investing in more skin products these days!

I dont think models are getting thinner Zenkat - think back to the early/mid 90s when Heroine Chic was all the rage. Models aren't that thin anymore....

No, I honestly think that most people in this world are attractive once you get to know them.

And the human body is ALWAYS a beautiful thing, the inner biology, of course.

It is becoming so hard to attain that I'm not even sure what the standard of beauty is these days..

I see a lot of woman getting freaked out by their weight, to be honest with you. My girlfriend came from vacation last night and was looking at her self in the mirror she was like "I am getting fat" She is a size 7-8!!!!!!!

That is so sad.

to me, beauty is the pattern of flaws and little imperfections, the whole body image reminds of the gestalt theory.
the standardized beauty models are premade cookie-cutter images. i see no beauty in perfection.

It would depend on whose standard of beauty you were going by.
18 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Wednesday 11/5/03 - 4:03:05 PM EST (GMT-5)
Yes. The ladies, though, seem to have more brutal criteria on guys than guys do on ladies when it comes to the physical realm.

Huh? What do you mean duke?
18 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Wednesday 11/5/03 - 4:07:35 PM EST (GMT-5)
Damson: It is true, things got a little bitter with models like Gisele Bundchen--now at least it's all right for waifs to have large breasts.
18 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Wednesday 11/5/03 - 4:17:36 PM EST (GMT-5)
The ladies expect the guys to be all buff and all that jazz. It's just that when they talk about guys, they're so wild! We men (and I'm speaking for my male group of friends) don't go into the gawry details about every single component of female beauty. We just want someone who is decent and who will be faithful to us. (Good luck to us, right? )

Are you serious?! I thought it was the other way round! LOL!
18 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Wednesday 11/5/03 - 4:23:39 PM EST (GMT-5)
No, it's not. I've heard female-female conversations about guys. They're very graphic, like they even describe what they physically want to do with the guy of their dreams! I was VERY disgusted.

I have a few close female friends and they actually told me straight up that I have to have such and such a build, height, dress a certain way, WALK a certain way, TALK certain ways... OR ELSE, they wished me luck.

Well I'm not like that! And anyone who talks like that (male or female) will never ever find that person!!

I have a difficult time saying that either gender is worse about being superficial about beauty. I've heard female-female conversations that are extremely narrow-minded and set up almost impossible standards of masculinity. At the same time, I've heard male-male conversations that are all about setting women up as objects only recognizable for use if a specific set of standards is lived up to.

Each gender is going to be convinced that the other is worse about it, but I personally feel that people are obsessive about their standards and critical of those that don't make it--gender doesn't seem to make much of a difference.

Define standard beauty
18 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Thursday 11/6/03 - 12:55:37 AM EST (GMT-5)
the look that a vast majority of people find very attractive at any given period in history.

And yes I think this is one of the first generations that considers hours at the gym as a basic necessity.

Everyone has their own definition of beauty....dammit!!!
18 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Thursday 11/6/03 - 6:33:31 PM EST (GMT-5)
Yeah. I haven't felt pretty lately.
18 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Saturday 11/8/03 - 6:03:05 AM EST (GMT-5)
most of the people who come up with these "standards" in the first place are idiots. they live in their rarefied world where they never have any contact with REAL people, and then foist their twisted view of what constitutes "beauty" on the masses, who develop complexes as a result of trying to live up to these impossible standards.

forget the tastemakers. just be yourself.

I wish fat people were in vogue.

I think all the teen magazines (Seventeen, YM, CosmoGirl, etc) are being hypocritical...Speaking from experience, you can leaf through them and read articles supporting being who you are and not caring about looking perfect...and then ALL of the clothing models are thin and have perfect hair and teeth. Maybe one, maybe two of them look normal and arent uberstick. I'm not saying all these girls are high-fashion living-the-good-life, they're probably normal...but still. As a non-stick, non-tan, messyhaired teenage girl, I need some support. I need to know that there are other normal looking girls out there...

Oh, and on that side topic--uberbuff tanned macho men are almost a turnoff to me. Give me lanky skater or a nice loser ANY DAY!

"I wish fat people were in vogue."

Ditto that sister.

18 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Sunday 11/9/03 - 4:02:56 PM EST (GMT-5)
Everyone SAYS they want fat people in Vogue. The simple fact is that if they put "fat" models in Vogue, (or other fashion magazines) they would lose money.
