Colin Farrell. He's not English, he's Irish, but he did a damn good job of the new york accent in phone booth, and he covers up his accent good in Minority Report.

Most of them do, but there was a British actor who spoke with an exaggeratedly gruff, throaty Midwestern accent you could tell was not authentic.

I think they do an okay job, don't see why anyone british would want to talk like a lousy american

Americans do a better impression of the British accent than Brits do an American accent.
19 yrs ago - Thursday 7/24/03 - 7:04:37 PM EST (GMT-5)
I'd have to disagree on that one. I've heard plenty of cheap imitations of British accents.

Gary Oldman, in particular, is fantastic at accents
19 yrs ago - Friday 7/25/03 - 6:35:38 AM EST (GMT-5)
Bob Hoskins is not. He failed miserably at trying to affect a Brooklyn accent.
19 yrs ago - Friday 7/25/03 - 6:37:04 AM EST (GMT-5)
Gary Oldman does indeed kick ass.

It's hard to tell, but given the almost universal inability of Americans to effect an English accent, it's difficult to say whether it goes both ways.

Madeleine Stowe does the most authentic accents of anyone I've heard, though.

The English accent is becoming more Americanised recently anyway, probably due to movies and tv so its not that hard anymore. Bloody americans (grrr) we invented accents first !!!!

Damian Lewis did a fantastic american accent in Band of Brothers. Gwyneth Paltrow does a good sloaney english accent - not sure if she's capable of doing any other kind of english accent though.
19 yrs ago - Friday 7/25/03 - 7:12:07 AM EST (GMT-5)
I wouldn't have said the accent was becoming Americanised, but phrases and vocabulary are. I noticed that both 'affect' and 'effect' can be used correctly to mean 'put on', regarding accents.
19 yrs ago - Friday 7/25/03 - 7:13:07 AM EST (GMT-5)
Thing is, it's hard for an English person to tell if an American accent sounds right, and vice versa.

You're right Kyry ^

haha Moleboy. I think Americans do a horrible job of trying to affect a British accent. Although guys with British accents are very sexy

Catherine Zeta Jones did an excellent job in The Haunting.

I think they can do our accent better than we can do theirs. Especially Austrailians, they can do perfect american accents on tv and movies, and then have aussie accents in bio's and interviews.

It's certainly true that a lot of Australians are cast in roles that could otherwise have been given to genuine Americans. I have Mulholland Drive in mind on this one.
19 yrs ago - Friday 7/25/03 - 9:58:53 PM EST (GMT-5)
I guess it depends on the actor. Some can pull it off better than others.

Yeah I'd say so.
19 yrs ago - Saturday 7/26/03 - 10:09:19 PM EST (GMT-5)
British chicks sound hot

When Americans do a British accent they tend to do a really posh sounding voice that no British people actually have, you can tell almost straight away when you hear that weird voice that it's an American, even if you don't know beforehand.
