Yes, but he would still be one of history's many war criminals.

Why sure, just like Jeffrey Dahmer would have been less despised if he hadn't killed and eaten people, and only been thinking about it. Why do you think Hitler *is* so despised? Duh.

^^ Hey! You copied!
19 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Thursday 5/15/03 - 12:44:54 PM EST (GMT-5)
I doubt it... he still ruthlessly slaughtered hundreds of thousands of people mercilessly in his acquisition of Europe... and the holocaust was brought to the world's attention well into the war... his infamy is not one-dimensional...
19 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Thursday 5/15/03 - 12:54:42 PM EST (GMT-5)
It's not one-dimensional, but you have to admit that the production of giant gas chambers and death factories was an innovation unique to Hitler. He's famous for it, after all. It's what one associates with him- ghettos, cattle cars, photos of starving, naked people, smokestacks, ovens. If the imagery associated with Hitler were confined to battlefield scenes, no matter how brutal, he would fall into the ranks of other warmongers of the 20th century.

I'm sure the anti-Semitic french would disagree that was the biggest tragedy of the war...
19 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Thursday 5/15/03 - 2:13:15 PM EST (GMT-5)
I'm not so sure.

yes
19 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Tuesday 7/8/03 - 9:06:54 AM EST (GMT-5)
I think he would still be pretty unpopular in Europe as he pretty much destroyed most of it.
19 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Tuesday 7/8/03 - 9:18:38 AM EST (GMT-5)
Hitler was never really despised by many.
19 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Tuesday 7/8/03 - 9:22:07 AM EST (GMT-5)
I would despise him anyway for that ridiculous mustache.
19 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Tuesday 7/8/03 - 9:23:02 AM EST (GMT-5)
An incisive statement.
19 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Tuesday 7/22/03 - 6:45:27 PM EST (GMT-5)
yes
19 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Wednesday 7/30/03 - 7:29:52 PM EST (GMT-5)
He'd be like Napolean.
19 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Wednesday 7/30/03 - 7:33:29 PM EST (GMT-5)
if he hadn't killed millions than yes he would be less despised. He would simply be a war criminal.
19 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Thursday 8/7/03 - 4:24:59 PM EST (GMT-5)
Is that really him in the picture?
19 yrs ago - Tuesday 9/9/03 - 10:08:34 PM EST (GMT-5)
He did so many horrible things that even if the holocost had not occured he would still be despised. Take his medical experiments for example.
19 yrs ago - Wednesday 9/10/03 - 4:15:19 AM EST (GMT-5)
^That was part of the holocaust, the holocaust was not solely the murder of jews, it included gypsies, blacks, Russian POW's and the mentally/physically disabled.

He would be a lot less despised. Hell, Europe has been conquered so many times by so many people in the last 2000 years. If he didn't cause the Holocaust, it wouldn't have been as bad as many of the other times. Eventually, his reign would fall, because the empire is too large, and too many people would long for a national identity. He would be hated for a while, then a few hundred years after the collapse of his empire, he'd be considered a strategist and a conquerer among Alexander teh Great and Atilla the Hun, as well as others. And I don't hear many people particularily hating them much

Hitler used thuggish intimidatory tactics to redued opposition to his "policies" the concentration camp program was in operation long before the extermination camps were devised.

Hitler was despised for much more than exterminating Jews as his masterace idea still sought to impose an Ayrian manifest denstiny over the untermenchen of Eastern Europe.

Comparing a Hitler without the industrial murdering process to Napolean, Alexander the Great or Attila is hardly accurate.

The closest comparison would be Stalin and Mao.
