The brilliance of Monty Python is that they are such a great ensemble. I don't think any one of them stands out more than any other on average in most Monty Python stuff, but Cleese is definitely the most successful soloist.

Actually, Terry Gilliam is absolutely uproariously funny on his own. He's also a very funny writer. John Cleese is, perhaps, the best in one-on-one comedy, and he's had a marvelous career; I love his work. But he's not quite as funny on his own as Gilliam is.
19 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Monday 6/2/03 - 5:12:49 PM EST (GMT-5)
Eric Idle.
19 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Monday 6/2/03 - 5:13:44 PM EST (GMT-5)
He couldn't have been that funny I can never tell him apart from Graham Chapman
19 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Monday 6/2/03 - 5:22:03 PM EST (GMT-5)
They all had their own particular humour. Jones' screeching women and grotty men. Idle's wide boys "Nudge Nudge" and "He's pinning for the fiords" Palin's northerners and desperate ambition "I always wanted to be a lumberjack." Chapman's straight men and Gilliam's cartoons. Palin has done load of stuff Ripping Yarns, The movies: The missionary and a private function. Around the world in Eighty days and Pole to Pole. Gilliam's films including Brazil are renowned and Eric Idle did Rutland Weekend Television but it wouldn't translate to a non British audience. He did nuns on the run and other stuff too. Cleese was always Cleese no matter how in character he was where the otherS especially Jones and Palin immersed themselves into the parts. Think of the classic sketches and think who is cracking you up.

LOL, I agree with what you said, bofu, that Cleese was Cleese no matter what character he was playing, but there's somthing about him that cracks me up. I think Palin and Idle were incredibly funny, too, but I still love sitting down to a good episode of Fawlty Towers.
19 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Tuesday 6/3/03 - 8:38:40 AM EST (GMT-5)
You cannot aprieciate the true spleandor of Fawtly Towers without sitting through years of the genre it parodied. The middle class British situation comedy. Generally the central male character endures a mildly annoying or embarresing experience, such as his boss coming to dinner and he runs out of sherry.
19 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Tuesday 6/3/03 - 8:40:52 AM EST (GMT-5)
I think he is one of the best known member of monty python, but he is amazingly funny too.
19 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Tuesday 6/3/03 - 8:42:36 AM EST (GMT-5)
bofu, I agree. I caught a few episodes of a more modern comedy 'Chef' on public television here and found it somewhat enjoyable...I regret not getting to see more of it.
19 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Tuesday 6/3/03 - 8:43:14 AM EST (GMT-5)
oh no! i thought chef was terrible!
19 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Tuesday 6/3/03 - 8:57:54 AM EST (GMT-5)
"comedy" for the middle class pipe and slippers audience such as Terry and June and Bless this House was dire. Cozy couples in overstuffed armchairs panicing because their daughter has an appointment with the doctor, the vicar phones up and they say something about tests, thinkig it's the doctor. Major embarresment. Fawtly Towers was like crack.

maybe I got lucky and caught a halfway decent episode. Or maybe I'm so starved for good British comedy it was what I had to settle for.
