thats silly, you don't have to think about it very much, The sopranos was like the most popular show last year, if that many perople were as enthusiastic about the actual practices of gangsters I doubt things like YT would get paid much attention.

Glamorized? No, I don't think so at all.

And books, don’t forget books

I have been told by a reliable source that mafia life as portrayed on screen is a fantasy, compared to how it really is.

I'd be interested to know at least one specific difference, according to your "reliable" source, Bobbncoll.

A mafia "gun" is always looking over his shoulder....ALWAYS!! And, payment for "services" rendered is not the final cost. you are indebted for life, and in turn, YOU will be looking over your shoulder...ALWAYS.

That doesn't surprise me that much, but I'm not sure how it conflicts with portrayals in media entertainment.

Most things portayed in film and TV is glamorized. The cop shows, the mafia shows , the medical yeah sure, but it is hardly a stop press.

Yes...but so are most things on television.

I'm currently hooked on the Sopranos. I won't spoil anything for anyone who may eventually learn about it, but there is a scene somewhere where this guy who makes a living where he occassionally has to kill people talks about how someone who causes a car accident is worse than he because they are hurting innocent people, as opposed to his own focus on people who deserve it. At least when we are suspending our disbelief, and sometimes our own values, I think the Mafia as portrayed in the media has a weird, twisted logic and honor to it. The penalties are more severe, but the concepts of honor, respect, loyalty, honesty, and hard-work are all present, within their own subculture.

I would hope so!

Don't tell my best friend that. She has this unexplained fascination with the Mafia and thinks it's the coolest thing ever. I must admit it's pretty neat how a group that large can be so oragnized and run like it does.

No, it's not. What you see on TV is basically how it really is.

I couldn't really say, as I'm not sure how the mafia operates in real life. The books I've read make it sound as though the portrayals are pretty accurate, but who konws? I'd be interested to hear how anyone on this site came by conclusive evidence for either argument.

Same here, ohlefty. I for one love the Sopranos, Goodfellas, the Godfather etc., but I have a feeling that if I knew a real life mobster I wouldn't like them.

I agree with UncleLaughie. Thanks for phrasing that so well. Sopranos rule.

I think they are absolutely not glamorized! They're all full of blood and gore, I mean who wants to be in the mafia after seeing Goodfellas, honestly.

They are basically common criminals and murderers. This bit about honor and justice is just an attempt to make themselves look good.
