Sometimes the film that will cause the most controversy if it wins is usually the films that wins regardless whether it is the best or not.

Each person has his own opinion. In my opinion a movie that won might have been terrible while others would love it and vice versa

no,it hardly ever happens, the only time i can think of when the Best Picture went to a deserving movie was American Beauty

That's all preference. There is a lot more that goes into the decision than the storyline itself. Of course, that is a huge and integral part but not the complete basis for the decision.

Does anyone in this world think Forest Gump is better than Pulp Fiction? What a joke.

Forrest Gump is the best movie ever. But still, it's only preference. lol

Pulp Fiction had a lot going for it as well. The cast was incredible. But I think Forrest Gump deserved it.

Feeble Forest is better than Pulp?
I'm gasping right now, literally gasping...
I think Forest Gump was perfectly entertaining, but it was such a safe, tepid movie. It told Americans exactly what they wanted to hear. I mean, that whole scene with Jenny wobbling on the ledge--high--in her disco outfit was straight-up camp. And of course, in the end, the whore gets what she deserves. And the Vietnam scenes--all these faceless "Orientals" surrounding the good ol' Americans. It was exhausting trying to process all the sterotypes being hurled at me. I did like the scene where Jenni has her tacky emotional meltdown in front of her old shack (because remember, all girls who are sexual are really molestation victims), but that's just because I'm a big ol' softy for stuff like that. Pulp was bold, daring, and hugely subversive at the time. It brought postmodernism into mainstream speak, and helped spark the revolution that "The Crying Game" had started.

Pulp was pivotal to the culture in a way that Forest could never be.

As much as I hate to admit it b/c I am such a HUGE Forrest Gump lover, you do have a point.
Which is why I hold true to my "it's all preference" comment.

Perhaps there should be an Oscars ceremony each year for films from five years ago - a little distance and retrospect might come up with different or more deserved winners.

That would be interesting, phoenix. That would help the films be honored for what they are, instead of for how well their production companies can influence voters.

Taking a look back at the winners of the last 10 years, I can say that Unforgiven (1993), Schlinder's List (1994), Braveheart (1996), American Beauty (2000),and Gladiator (2001) all deserved the oscar. However, movies such as Pulp Fiction, Fargo, Saving Private Ryan, and L.A. Confidential were all robbed of best picture imho. So that makes me believe that best picture wins best picture oscar 50% of the time :)

Hell no! The Academy Awards are just a chance for the big Hollywood names to kiss each other's asses.

I think best picture goes to whoever's studio did the most behind the scene lobbying and also who happens to be Hollywood's and the media's darling at the moment. I also agree 100% with camelboy's statement. I think the whole thing is irrelevant.

I think there were movies from the past that definetely deserved Best Picture (including but not limited to) "The French Connection" (1971), "One Flew Over the Cookoo's Nest" (1975), "Unforgiven" (1992), "Silence of the Lambs" (1991). Then there were some films that won..."Titanic"??? What the hell were they thinking??

Titanic was a great movie. The special effects were very well done. The recreation of the ship. The recreation of the events. The only negative was the stupid 'romantic' plotline. Other than that, it was certainly worthy of capturing the best picture award.
