Kitty.... read up. Pick up a copy of the Koran. Best thing you can do is form your own opinions as to what is best for you. Because I've been exposed to just about every religion there is... I'm a little bit of everything. But they're all related anyway. There's a difference between being religious and spiritual. And there's a difference between religion and church. I am a deeply, DEEPLY spiritual person, but I am by no means religious. The difference between everone's faith beliefs is in their minds, it's not just theits and atheists. But I truly admire your post. Very rational and well thought.

"If you don't believe in it, thats up to you but then you will have to pay the ultimate price. Hell or Heaven, its up to you where you want to go" You make me think of George W. Bush : "You're either with us, or you're with them" :) Anyway...it's the scaring tactics that you display here that make me question religions. I myself am not planning on going to heaven or hell. I'm just going to die like you and everyone else. And that's it. And to answer the question : no, it will never die out. Mainly because a lot of people need faith..they need something to hold on to. And I would say "let them", as long as they don't bother me with it.

kittykat14, I don't want to scream, "WOO-HOO!" so loud that I scare you off, but I'm excited for your decision, just like some atheists might be disappointed. I'm intrigued to hear more about your spiritual journey, but I don't want to hound you about it. Take it slow and don't forget your brain. That's about the only unsolicited advice I'll offer for now. My wife and I over-committed to a church, and too quickly, and ended up getting burned when we learned it wasn't what we thought it was. Respect for the individual and his or her walk with God is an important criterium.

Heh, I highly doubt it.

I don't see how, when it'd been around for as long as humans have. Humans and religion go hand in hand according to history. Most of the disagreements between societies in the past were do to religion.

Never. It is human nature to seek ultimate relevance.

"I love you when you bow in your mosque, kneel in your temple, pray in your church. For you and I are sons of one religion, and it is the spirit." -Kahlil Gibran, "The Voice of the Poet"

I don't think so. There will always be people who will look for hope in something they can't see or prove. And whenever you have something like that, you will have some sort of organization to it.

I'm now a Christian, but it's this weird blend of Mozart's Requiem, Dante's Divine Comedy, and my own life experience.

"No, it's the only thing that keeps us alive!"

No, what keeps me alive is oxygen.

Religion is like the novel 'Great Expectations' it's not all it's cracked up to be.

boom boom!

I don't think it'll ever die out. As one loses 'popularity', another one will be made up. There are always people willing to follow some crazy new religion.

Why would atheists be disappointed that someone may become a Christian? I, myself, don't care either way. We're not a religion; we're not out to convert new atheists!

atheists: if you MUST convert to theism, look into unitarianism. its the only group i can see might have any future.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of Christ's b/c I happen to believe in Him, but you've gotta give a lot of credit to the born-agains for freaking people out with how they jump on people 80% of the time. To understand why they do this, you'd have to really have been involved with this crowd at least once in your life time. They mean well, but the thing is, the Churches today promote the Apostle Paul much more than they do Christ. Paul did this similar harping on people, only, he mainly did it to other christians in church. Where as, many christians do it to people outside of the church. Anyway, the main point is that Jesus was more gentle and loving and came across more confidently and He is why Christianity exists, so that's why I think it's important to make him the main focus. He's a good guy and he's probably frustrated at how those representing him jump on people any chance they get. Heck, I'm frustrated by them, but what can I do?

RELIGION WILL NEVER DIE OUT..what's wrong with you people
19 yrs ago - Friday 10/3/03 - 2:40:36 PM EST (GMT-5)
It's on it's way....but I don't think it'll ever absolutely die out. Just become less...known, eventually..

As long as people can make money off religion and quench their sexual desires from little kids who actually believe in god....yea it will stay
19 yrs ago - Friday 10/3/03 - 3:22:19 PM EST (GMT-5)
I think faith will be eventually be replaced by hope when they realize how irrational a lot of religions are.
19 yrs ago - Saturday 10/4/03 - 8:02:04 AM EST (GMT-5)
As long as there is something resembling a human, there will ALWAYS be religion.
19 yrs ago - Saturday 10/4/03 - 8:33:12 AM EST (GMT-5)
staygold82, that claim contradicts with a lot of what I have observed from atheists here, but I *did* include the adjective "some."
19 yrs ago - Saturday 10/4/03 - 8:41:21 AM EST (GMT-5)
I sincerely hope that the institutions associated with religions and the "I believe in God, so I know what he wants" attitude die out.

Religion itself is just one more thing in which people can differ from eachother and that in itself adds spice to life, even for a poor atheistic sod like myself.

19 yrs ago - Saturday 10/4/03 - 8:42:47 AM EST (GMT-5)
Maybe, but I'm not inclined to believe that humans will become MORE enlightened for a while.
19 yrs ago - Saturday 10/4/03 - 8:46:09 AM EST (GMT-5)
The presumption that religious institutions should die out ought to die out, too, zaraphel.

The presumption that religious people are not enlightened isn't very enlightened in itself, Shaded.
