It's a solid piece of summer movie popcorn, nothing spectacular. The look as expected is amazing. Pixar really knows how to recreate amazing locations and they did it again here. The fish out of water jokes fell pretty flat, and the plot was far from heart-felt. However the spy-story was enjoyable as were most of the new characters.
I also enjoyed the nods to "Incredimobiles" and "Gasteau's" from previous Pixar stuff.
The kids both loved it, which always helps. However, Pixar really rose the bar of emotional connection from Wall-e to Up to Toy Story 3. This one went a complete new direction and just said "Here's some action, hope you enjoy". I did enjoy, it just didn't really feel like Pixar's standards of story writing.
Well written, Trav.
I didn't think it was very good, either. It didn't leave any special lingering feelings at all.
After I realized I didn't really love it, I looked at the reviews. This one seems dead on:
"This is one Pixar film where you really do feel the length as keenly as the merchandising push."
I was also concerned about how they'd treat the Doc Hudson issue, and I'm quite pleased with how they incorporated that. They really did take a moment of silence for dear old Paul.
I know lots of people like Mater but I didn't think he should be the star of the movie.
Only Pixar could make up a concept this crappy, and still make it come out as good as it did. Still, out of all their movies, I'd say this is the worst.
