AMERICAN movies, we do. Foreign produced films, if we get them at all, usually show up well after they've been in theaters overseas. Sometimes, after they're already out on DVD!

Yes it is a new film based on the old series of Japanese movies about Zatoichi. I don't think its a direct remake though it is just true to the original series.

I wish I could see the originals now. This was fantastic! The guy at blockbuster warned me against it as it had subtitles in. Apparantly they get loads of complaints if they don't warn people in advance. Yet another reason I dislike blockbuster, and the moviegoing public around here... But the film was awesome! I was kind of hoping the fight between Zatoichi and Hattori wouldn't happen as I got so into all the characters. Hattori was only fighting to save his wife. They really developed most of the characters very well indeed. *Spoiler Warning* My favorite bit: "A blind man like you won't slay me so easily!" Zatoichi opens his eyes "What the hell? You're not blind?" "Not at all." "Why do you act blind?" "Because the blind... they sense people better."

Excellent movie, although I dont' know how it compares to the originals. All I know is that the story developed was sublime, I love when movies blur the line between absolute evil and absolute good. Even though I know WHY Kitano chose to make the gore extremeley unrealistic, I still thought it was kind of stupid, but it didn't detract from the movie.

Are samauri movies supposed to be typically this violent? It's a fantastic film. About the level that I come to expect from Takeshi.
