I will also say that movies romanticize a lot of things. If sh*t is too real, it turns a lot of people off, so the stories you get are feel-good rather than 100% truthful.

That was why I was a little surprised to see this from Spike Lee. He's not exactly known for shying away from racial issues no matter how uncomfortable it makes (white) people. It was a weird take from him.

And I do get that the movie was a little more on the dark humor side than some of his earlier stuff, but that doesn't mean you have to make stuff up out of whole cloth to play cops as Big Heroes.

yeah, and when you factor in Lee being paid $200K by the NYPD to improve relations with minority communities....a picture starts to be painted
3 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Tuesday 2/5/19 - 6:39:02 PM EST (GMT-5)
Iiiiii did not know about that. And you're right;.
3 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Tuesday 2/5/19 - 6:48:47 PM EST (GMT-5)
Can I ask what's wrong with improving relations?

Spike Lee's been a huge critic of the NYPD in the past.
3 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Tuesday 2/5/19 - 6:50:21 PM EST (GMT-5)
He's a director and it was for an ad campaign.

Not exactly way out in left field.
3 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Tuesday 2/5/19 - 6:51:03 PM EST (GMT-5)
nothing is wrong with improving relationships with minority groups

but if his idea of that is "making police propaganda" that's an issue

i'm not saying definitively that's what this movie is, but it sure f-cking feels like it
3 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Tuesday 2/5/19 - 6:54:23 PM EST (GMT-5)
Also, generally the relations need improving because the group in power is sh*tting on the group not in power, and has been for a long time. Which...is definitely true re: nonwhite people and the NYPD.

Making cops look better than they are isn't really the right answer there. Cops *being* better than they are, and reaching out to communities they've mistreated is.
3 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Tuesday 2/5/19 - 6:59:52 PM EST (GMT-5)
Did you guys see the ad campaign or are you hip to how the NYPD is trying to improve relations?

Ftr, the movie's set in Colorado Springs, not NYC.

3 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Tuesday 2/5/19 - 7:03:45 PM EST (GMT-5)
We'll just agree to disagree here on the movie being some sort of propaganda.

I find that a tad ridiculous.
3 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Tuesday 2/5/19 - 7:10:28 PM EST (GMT-5)
I have now (looked it up after he said something). And it's very "neighborhood policing! We're really just regular people just like you!" Very little in the way of "here's what the NYPD is doing to change the culture of the organization."
3 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Tuesday 2/5/19 - 7:16:42 PM EST (GMT-5)
So you personally find it inadequate, that's fair.

People have differing opinions.
3 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Tuesday 2/5/19 - 7:20:42 PM EST (GMT-5)
Of course they do. But it's no secret to anyone that the NYPD's race relations have been an absolute joke for decades, and I'm just saying, this ad campaign is pretty tone deaf re: that issue.
3 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Tuesday 2/5/19 - 7:21:21 PM EST (GMT-5)
In what is essentially advertising, there are certain things that people respond to and that may be why they went with that angle. Most of the time ads don't tell the whole story or address an entire issue.

3 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Tuesday 2/5/19 - 7:22:00 PM EST (GMT-5)
It's literally impossible in a short ad, is what I'm saying.

3 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Tuesday 2/5/19 - 7:25:08 PM EST (GMT-5)
Well it's not impossible to talk about how they could do better, rather than try to just show themselves as the good guys, is what I'm saying.
3 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Tuesday 2/5/19 - 7:28:31 PM EST (GMT-5)
I agree with that, but consistent "cops are crooked" messaging isn't helpful, either.

Ftr, I eye roll when I see a "Blue Lives Matter" bumper sticker and the like because there are absolutely bad cops out there. It just generally gets dangerous for everyone involved if your first thought when you see a guy in a police uniform is to automatically think that he's there to f*ck you up.
3 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Tuesday 2/5/19 - 7:39:11 PM EST (GMT-5)
Well, I don't think it's "consistent cops are crooked messaging" for the NYPD to admit their race relations are garbage and have been since forever, and talk about how THEY are going to do better. Ads about how they're really the good guys and all that are just pushing the burden off onto people of color, rather than forcing the cops to address the very real problems in their ranks. It's not a both sides issue, tbh; the cops are the ones who've been wrong for decades, and it's not the people who just need to change their minds and trust them without any substantive changes on the part of the police.

I'm a 30something white lady, so the chances of a police encounter going badly wrong for me are extremely low. But I'll be goddamned if I trust cops. I've seen enough of how many of them really ARE crooked, and ignorant, and cruel.
3 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Tuesday 2/5/19 - 7:43:49 PM EST (GMT-5)
I'm not talking specifically about NYPD with that, that's a general statement.

The movie that spurned this conversation and the situation it's based on are not based in NYC, though Spike's ad campaign definitely is.

3 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Tuesday 2/5/19 - 7:44:38 PM EST (GMT-5)
I don't find attitudes that characterize entire groups helpful, but that's just me.

Behavior matters. If police don't like being known as corrupt, crooked, racist assholes, they need to clean house and change the way they do things, instead of hiding behind all that thin blue line stuff. The number of times I've seen local cops (guys I went to school with) get in line behind some heinous bullsh*t like Tamir Rice, Eric Garner, or a dozen other high-profile police murders...it's sickening.

A "good cop" who won't call out a bad cop is just a bad cop. And I've seen way too many bad cops to make it worth the gamble to trust any of them.
3 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Tuesday 2/5/19 - 7:55:04 PM EST (GMT-5)
I judge everyone I come into contact with based on their behavior.

Maybe you just know a bunch of assholes.
3 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Tuesday 2/5/19 - 7:57:40 PM EST (GMT-5)
Well, I don't know how much evidence I would even have to give in order to show you that cops are crooked, so whatever I guess. But life experience tells me they generally aren't to be trusted, so I don't. I won't be rude off the bat, but in every interaction, whether it's with me or just with someone else and I'm observing, they start from zero trust with me, period.
3 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Tuesday 2/5/19 - 8:03:31 PM EST (GMT-5)
I really liked the movie for what it is, but it’s really f-cking disappointing that they glossed over his involvement in infiltrating black organizations
