I saw it last night, and I enjoyed it for the most part. I think my biggest gripe is that this one elaborates on where the creature came from.. I think it would be better if it's origins were never revealed.
While the creature effects were good, the CG in this one just doesn't quite satisfy in the way that Carpenter's creature did.
Of you see it, don't leave the theater as soon as the credits role.. give it a minute.
I'll get my quibbles with 'The Thing' out of the way first.
Firstly, I was disappointed that plot-wise (and in some cases character-wise) it was very much a retread of the 1982 classic. I would have preferred a story that was quite different so that this movie had more of its own identity, rather than feeling like a rehash of another film.
Secondly, like reb0rn4never said above, some of the eeriness and originality behind the alien was lost by taking the audience inside the spaceship - which looked like several other spaceship interiors from other movies.
Despite the above quibbles, though, I liked 'The Thing'. It was technically well-made with good production values, and like the 1982 classic it conveyed a great mood of claustrophobic, gruesome and paranoid horror.
I loved this movie. Fun, scary, good FX design on the monster. The heroine was realistic - not showy, but sharp and grounded. There were so many white guys with similar appearances that it became frustrating to figure out who was who, but other than that I was a satisfied customer!

yeah, it didn't scare me as much as it blew my mind.
