Based on a true story. Learning about the actual true story is probably more fascinating for me anyway.

It just left me feeling empty.

Not fun to come home feeling that way.

I read the book back in 2005, and it has haunted me ever since - it was a very moving and tragic story.

That is partly why I am very much looking forward to seeing the film - as well as the fact that the reviews for it thus far have been very divided. While some reviewers have greatly admired the film, others have heavily criticised it. That sort of reaction about a film intrigues me the most.

I'm not familiar with the story but Emile Hirsch is my favorite actor and am therefore very interested to see it.

I read the book and went to see the movie the day after I finished it and the movie stays very true to the book.
There was only one omission but it did not bother me that much.

The direction is f*cking amazing and so is the dialogue. I really enjoyed that things Chris wrote were actually used as either voice-overs, dialogue, or actual text on the screen. The essence of the man the story is based on is really captured.

Emile Hirsch did an amazing job. I already knew he was a great actor and this movie really did it for me. And he does a

full frontal
!

The ending was great and not what I expected at all even though I already knew the story. I really liked how the movie played out.

In the end, the only thing I didn't like was the structure. If you watch it you'll see what I mean.

9/10

Wow.

Very interesting, and great cinematography. I am going to have to check out the book. Does anyone know some of the books he was reading?

I really want to see this one. I actually heard some of the music from the soundtrack before I had even heard of the movie.

It looks amazing. I can't wait to see it.

In the book 'Into the Wild' the books he was found with are listed along with passages that were highlighted in them when people found Chris.

Very bountifully beautiful movie. Makes me really wonder why I'm city-bound so much this year...

You really feel for the characters.

I want to read the book now. The movie was seriously intense. Chris was a beautiful person who touched so many lives. Even though the ending was sad, it was happy too. He knew what it was all about before he left. It was touching.

That's the deceptiveness of the movie I think. They canonize this guy, making it seem as if he touched all these lives and had a deeper understanding of life. You should read the book because I don't think his life is romanticized in that.

Actually I differ and think that although the book tried to remain balanced it is clear what side the author is on (the side of canonizing).

Well, I have to admit I haven't read the book. I just read the article in adventure magazine by the author. I've read a ton of reviews and musings on the movie though, and from what I gather, there is more raw info about McCandless life in the book. So if you want to extract the real person out of people's depictions of him, go to the book and not the movie.

For example, the part in the movie where the sister voice overs that the father abused the wife was fabricated for the movie. There isn't any evidence that that happened, but the movie felt an explanation was needed so they added that in.

Oh, for sure the book would have more detail, but from the movie that's what it seemed like to me. I do plan on reading the book eventually.

i heard eddie vedder's song ( hard sun) and watched the video and i fell in love with it espically with the actor emile whats his name in it

i don't want it to be only a pipe dream.

SO I've got free tickets to see this movie...I looked up this guy last night, so I know what will happen in the end (which I would like to see how the movie handles that) but is the rest of the movie too sappy/preachy? This just looks like the type of movie I wait till it's on TV to see.
13 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Monday 11/19/07 - 9:47:49 PM EST (GMT-5)
Sappy/preachy? No.

Beautiful is the word.

13 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Wednesday 11/21/07 - 7:07:16 AM EST (GMT-5)

I was pleased to find that the film is very faithful to the book and a wonderful piece of cinema.

I'm glad to hear the positive feedback about the film. I haven't seen it but loved the book, of course. It's such a moving story - and a bit controversial too which may explain the "empty" feeling. Perhaps, you don't know whether to admire him or pity him?

The DVD comes out February 12th.

I just saw the movie tonight. It was amazing.
It kinda left everyone speechless when the lights turned on.
