I actually didn't hate it. Though, I will agree that I'm kinda sick of seeing these makeovers of Disney villains into more likable, sympathetic characters (why can't someone be evil just because?)
But I feel like in Maleficent, they actually gave her a REASON for being a total bitch to the kingdom. That was something I didn't understand as a kid when I would watch Sleeping Beauty. Why did Maleficent hate them. Why would she waste spit on people she viewed as so beneath her? Not being invited to a party didn't seem like a strong enough motive to me.
I was kinda beginning to roll my eyes at all the 'sweet gestures' Maleficent was doing. And I didn't like who the King became. It kinda disturbed me how awful the Fairies were in raising Aurora. I know why they made it that way, but even then....meh.
What I did like was the girl power and the ending. I thought that was a nice departure.
I'm real behind the times, yes, I realize, but I finally got around to watching it today - and it wasn't 100% horrible.
Angelina Jolie was really the shining star in the whole thing, however. Aurora and the fairy aunts were total ditzes, the king was way over-acted and honestly his vengeance was obnoxious (he cut off HER wings - what in hell did he think was going to happen?!)
Cinematically it was rather striking and I liked how they mixed in the Disney bits a little. It also made me feel a little bit bad for Maleficent - they made her a sympathetic character. And the crow dude added a little levity.
