A truly, beautiful haunting film about a woman from the city who gets remarried to a man in a small fishing village after her first husband commits suicide. The landscape and traditional farmhouses of the rural mountainous surroundings along the Japan Sea lend the film a haunting, remote feeling.
She forces herself to come to terms with her first husband's suicide and confronts a series of illusions. The title of the film "Maboroshi" means 'illusion.'
Maborosi is a film made by an expert photographer pretending to be a director. This film, simply put, a collection of gorgeous, very meticulously shot pictures. Every single frame is a fibrant photograph, and that's what's so wonderful about this film.
When you talk about art in movies, movies like this come directly to mind, the visual imagery is the most important aspect of this film and I think everyone who appreciates artistic photography would love 'Moborosi'. Personally, I thought the story and characters were really irrelevant to the overall aesthetic beauty of this film, and there are a lot of people who I would definatley reccomend this film too.
If you can handle a bit of minamalist plot but nearly 2 hours of beautiful film photography, this is your movie.
