Isn't this as bad as cutting cops to reduce crime?

I'm not entirely sure I get how this is going to work... I mean, have you ever seen people at a broken light? They don't know what to do with themselves.

This idea has fail written all over it.
15 yrs ago - Wednesday 9/12/07 - 2:21:27 AM EST (GMT-5)
They said it had already worked somewhere else. I don't understand how it works, though. Maybe it causes people to be more cautious.

Typical Reuters, they don't bother to even touch on the logic behind it.

Well, that explained a LOT. >.>

How did that work efficiently in the other city? Do they even know why traffic lights were invented in the first place?
15 yrs ago - Wednesday 9/12/07 - 3:06:24 AM EST (GMT-5)
By treating pedestrians as vehicles that use the space, you remove the separate treatment between other cars and people on the road. Having that many more "vehicles" on the road may increase caution and awareness. Inventive idea nonetheless.

well in the netherlands all can work...but this would not be the case in any other country. in the netherlands they can even have legal drugs and live with it and everything works fine but i doubt that anywhere else this would be such a great idea

Maybe they were having problems regarding vehicle-pedestrian accidents? If a pedestrian is walking in front of a green light he/she will likely get run over because drivers assume pedestrians will not cross. However, if there are no signs a driver has to be cautious at all times. Although it may reduce accidents (how can a driver hurt someone when they are stuck behind a slow pedestrian?)this will probably make travel times much longer for drivers.

Here is a link to the Dutch city where they've implemented it:

hey why not put all traffic underground....and let them breathe their own fumes...
that would be a good idea to reduce accidents...and to reduce traffic....and it would only cost about a zillion dollars....or the wage of two or three politicians...

I thought that the idea behind this is that people will be much more cautious, as they can no longer blindly rely on a set of rules.

Works the same way everything works when the government doesn't promis to protect you. Everyone starts paying more attention.
15 yrs ago - Wednesday 9/12/07 - 10:05:03 AM EST (GMT-5)
Im sorry but i think people pay less attention when in a car, and even less attention as a pedestrian. AT least here in the US I find pedestrians alwasy assume that they have the right of way no matter what so a car HAS to stop for them. In a car people think they are invencible so who cares if a couple of people get mowed down.

You're all idiots. This idea has been implemented in the UK and worked. People are more cautious without the lights and more likely to slow down through intersections where there are none. The government screwed up in the first place with the idea of traffic lights everywhere since they can't calculate where to put them.

Read Mises' Socialism you neanderthals.

This seems fine... =/

This has happened down the road I use to get to town.

There have been 9 casualties and 4 fatalities in the last year down there, and there haven't been any ((yet)) since this light thing's been introduced.

15 yrs ago - Wednesday 9/12/07 - 2:18:27 PM EST (GMT-5)
Works fine as long as everyone is sensible. But what happens in the night when some idiot decides to bomb it down the road?
15 yrs ago - Wednesday 9/12/07 - 2:18:43 PM EST (GMT-5)
yes, i agree with some posts, it increases attentiveness. and as for the post about seeing people at broken lights not knowing what to do, its because theyre used to it, "break" all of the lights and they know what to do. also it reduces frustration, people are much happier to yield to other vehicles and pedestrians when they dont have to stop so much
15 yrs ago - Wednesday 9/12/07 - 2:31:21 PM EST (GMT-5)
the reason this works s because people are more cautious about hitting people know that everyone walks where ever.

If you were a good economist, you would realize that after the seatbelt law was instated, pediestrian deaths actually INCREASED because people didn't fear for their lives as much and just drove faster. Too bad for little jimmy crossing the street.

It works because of reduced incentives to drive fast.... that seems like a stupid idea to me anyway

Hmm, Interesting.
15 yrs ago - Wednesday 9/12/07 - 3:06:27 PM EST (GMT-5)
Cantab, what happens when someone decides to do that now? You're a moron.
15 yrs ago - Wednesday 9/12/07 - 3:33:24 PM EST (GMT-5)
I agree this is a great idea, and it has worked elsewhere before, even saw a video of a guy walking blindfolded through a street without getting hit because of people paying attention. Much like a smaller study where wearing seat belts increase accidents because you are more reckless.
