"Conservative parents have swarmed school board meetings in Texas and across the country in recent months to call for the removal of library books that deal with race, racism, sex, gender and sexuality. Some parents have taken it a step further, filling out paperwork to formally challenge the appropriateness of library books and forcing school administrators to review them."

Out of the 50 on the list, I've only read one- - City of Thieves. I thought it was an excellent book and don't recall any “cinema for adult viewingographic imagery”...

It seems like only one parent had complained about each of the books. I would think they would have a rule about how many complaints they get before banning the book.

I bet if you look hard enough, you can find something you can complain about in any book. Even Dr. Suess got banned.

Even then, it's the library, not the classroom. I think that any and all books should be available in a library setting.

I can see some legitimacy in questioning if a specific title is appropriate to teach/discuss in a classroom, but the vast majority of teachers know their students and can choose books and present lessons that are age appropriate for their class.

Looks like a good ban list. Liberals indoctrinating kids into believing they are the opposite sex or brainwashing them into being gay. No wonder kids are so screwed up today.

i've read the kite runner and haven't heard of over half of these. plus, it's not like anyone has the power to stop kids from reading these books other than their parents.

I didn't read the book, but I saw the movie of "Me, Earl and the Dying Girl". It was really great. I'm thinking the criticism of the book is overblown.

I think that most calls for banning something are overblown.

Exactly.

Boohoo the evil conservatives DON'T want kids to choose their own gender, DON'T want to sexualize kids, DON'T want to teach kids that everyone is racist and black people are screwed from birth because they're black.

I’m actually kind of in agreement with banning these books.

Especially when at the other side of the spectrum they’re trying to remove the Western Canon from our educational institutions. No one plays fair anymore.

There we go. The right-wing authoritarians show everyone who they truly are and the right-wingers just nod their heads as if they weren't accusing the left of "cancel-culture" for the last decade.

Business as usual.

To whom are you referring with your 'the right-wingers just nodding their heads' comment?

If you can't recognise them then you're too much of a dunce to bother explaining it to.

What would be wrong with gender being a choice, if it was a choice?

Are we talking Freud or Jung.

I’m personally in Freud’s camp.

Castration anxiety is something I believe exists.

I don’t think women experience that.

So choosing to be female is an easy out to avoid castration anxiety?

I think that’s being overcome by castration anxiety.

I just had this conversation at the bar. There are stages of human development that are partially or fully interrupted. Sounds crazy but Freud put a system in place to help define that.

We’re not floating spirit creatures like Jung suggests. Mysticism and paganism kind of creeping in with Jung’s theories.

These are ppl’s lives, you don’t. Not conversations at the bar

Are we allowed to talk about book bans at the bar?
3 months ago - Wednesday 3/9/22 - 9:39:29 PM EST (GMT-5)
What are we allowed to have conversations about when at the bar?

Is it OK to discuss Freud's The Ego and the Id, or would you prefer Jung's Modern Man in Search of a Soul?

Is it OK to talk about Russia and the Ukraine, or is everything about peoples' lives off limits for conversation at the bar?

Yeah. Very cryptic incomplete grammar post. Not sure what to make of it.
