Carl Nassib started his Monday night by making history as the first openly gay athlete to play in a regular-season NFL contest.

He ended it hours later by making the game’s most important defensive play, forcing an overtime fumble that led to his Las Vegas Raiders scoring a thrilling 33-27 victory over the visiting Baltimore Ravens.

Who would be doubting him? It isn't like this is his first game in the NFL, just the first game after coming out.

Right, and most of the comments I've seen from raiders and raven fans rarely even bring up the fact.

I get it though - I thought NFL fans would be much worse... especially raiders fans for some odd. reason.

Might've seen a different set of comments if the raiders lost maybe?

when i was a student at my high school, i remember the basketball and football coaches specifically promoting hypermasculinity. one of the guys on the football team came out as gay and he quit after coming out. i get that times have changed and people's attitudes have as well, but there might be some people still questioning if a gay man can cut it in football.

I think the doubt would happen more in the case of a first year player- - like in the case of Michael Sam. If he doesn't do well, then people can easily attribute it to him being gay rather than his lack of ability to play at the pro level. Nassib has played a few years already and established a decent level of play- - I'd be surprised if anyone would think that him coming out would result in him suddenly failing as a player.
