“Sorry Simone Biles, but there’s nothing heroic or brave about quitting because you’re not having ‘fun’ – you let down your team-mates, your fans and your country,” - Piers Morgan

I think Piers Morgan is the most inconsequential figure in sport today.

He just wants to make noise since he got booted out of breakfast TV.

While I would have loved to see Biles compete, I think it would have been more of a letdown to her teammates/fans if she chose to compete and ended up performing poorly (relatively speaking) and bringing down the team score (in the team competition).

For the individual events, one of the team will now have a chance to compete in her place rather than watch from the sidelines. Without Biles competing, Lee was able to win gold. I wouldn't call that a let down.

Exactly plus describing the mental pressure building up from a poor performance as "not having fun" is worthy of an internet troll, which I guess is what Morgan is these days,

Not to mention that failing at gymnastics can be dangerous. You could wind up paralysed if your mind's not 100% in it.

Not having fun were her words:
“I just don’t trust myself as much as I used to and I don’t know if it’s age. I’m a little bit more nervous when I do gymnastics. I feel like I’m also not having as much fun and I know that this Olympic Games I wanted it to be for myself.”

So do you support what Piers Morgan said, Noldor?

When I first heard she was quitting I said “What happened? Did she injure herself?” Nope. Maybe she got some bad news from home. Nope. She just decided she wasn’t into it.

I’m surprised how this breaks down on party lines. The left say she’s a hero and brave. The right says basically, no she’s not.

I did hear later that she has ADD and wasn’t allowed to take her medication. Japan doesn’t allow any drugs during the Olympics, even prescription drugs. Ok, I can see quitting over that, because she would be unable to focus. But she, herself, did not give that as her reason for quitting.

It’s odd that she would spend all this time and effort to train for this only to quit at the very end, instead of pushing through and doing the best she can do.

By competing in the team event she would drag down the result of the team.

If she is under enough mental stress to pull out of the team event then she is equally under stress to pull out of the individual event.

Everything is left and right to you. So it's unsurprising you would cut things the same old way.

I guess to you it's just some girly jumping about and no one would risk suffering serious injury by just "pushing through"

Nope, it breaks down for me into the fact that I’m a licensed mental health professional. So I’ll ask again, do you support what Piers Morgan said?

In my space, this has not broken down party lines at all. I've been surprised how understanding some have been that I expected otherwise from. I assume the mountain of medals, the fact that she's won with broken bones and kidney stones, and that she was not allowed to bring her medication to Japan, etc...has all somehow made most people understanding.

Also dear lord, reading about the "twisties" gets my heartrate up. The idea of the internal compass just sort of peacing out mid routine sounds awful.

1) She could have gotten seriously injured like other gymnists

2) she could have caused her team to lose

3) none of you have won any medals

4) As George Takei said (paraphrasing) She should have taken one for the team - Said by a much of people who wont get a vaccine or wear masks.

5) Its her body and her life if she gets permanently injured or disabled or paralyzed she will have to live with it for the rest of her life and you wont be there. You will forget in a week. Even if she won you would forget.

Russian gymnast who was pushed back from injury too soon and forced to do something very difficult who was permanently paralyzed at 20 two weeks before the Olympics to 'push through' and spent the next 26 years of her life in a chair until she died at 46.

Do any of you remember who won gold in those Olympics?

I sure dont.

God have mercy on anyone coming to you for mental health issues, c-boy.

As soon as you quoted Takei.....

Plus you're a bass player.

Bass players are mostly snowflakes.

RIP Dusty.

I had an experience with a mental health issue last week.

I’m assuming Simone would require a finely tuned mental state. Being not able to take medicine at the Tokyo Olympics is interesting though.

I think I support that in a passive way.

George Takei is really aligned with the anti-vax/anti-maskers on this?

as a coach i've had to make last-minute decisions on who to start and who to bench. leading up to a crucial game, one of my best players had unfortunately gone through a few family issues. i told him it was ultimately up to him if he wanted to play or not. i had to start his backup (a freshman) and had to change the tactics up accordingly.

i don't blame her for quitting, that's a lot of pressure to put on someone at the highest level of competition. hopefully whatever is bothering her, she gets the help she needs.

Yes. Read the quote again. If you’re quitting because you’re not having fun (at this point in the competition) then it’s neither heroic or brave. If you’re quitting because you have a real fear of becoming injured or paralyzed, then that is a valid reason to quit.
